Turbo training tyre

I'm guessing this may be a real noobie query but I need to know nonetheless. I've been hearing that my turbo trainer isn't particularly good for my rear tyre and that its a good idea to use a training tyre. However I cycle outside when I can so do people put on a training tyre and take it off again when hitting the roads (seems like a pain) ... Or am I missing the glaringly obvious? I have a spare wheel I could use but that seems even more work!! Help!

The turbo generates a lot of heat in the tyre and can be quite hard wearing on a normal tyre. There are specific turbo tyres you can get for the turbo ONLY.
A lot of people just use an old tyre until it goes.

Thanks, I understand that but if my question is if I put a training tyre on, do I have to change it when going out for a ride. What do others do?

Use two back wheels, one with a Turbo specific tyre on it, one for normal road use.

Ok So I'd need to buy a new gear/cassette for the other rear wheel?

Wheelworx do the complete package including turbo tyre for €130, if you shop around you might get something cheaper.

I started turbo training this year for the first time. Bought my tacx trainer in one LBS, he gave me a good deal. Then when I healed up (financially) I decided to get a new wheel/tyre/cassette setup. So I went to my other LBS and asked for the worst he had and to do me the best deal possible. I got wheel, cassette and tyre for €25. Now it's probably the worst looking wheel I've ever seen, not buckled but not true either. Dunno what the cassette is like but my chain turns the wheel and that's all that matters.
If you have a few quid, buy a new wheel and a turbo specific tyre and a cassette (beware that if the wear on your chain is very different to the cassette that they will not work well together). But if you're watching the pennies then just do what I did and you'll be on the go very cheap and just as effectively...your legs don't care if you have a gammy back wheel or not!

PS try to deal with your local shops before going online.

I have a good (almost new) shimano rs10 which I took off the bike to put on the SLs. I'm going to use that. I bought a Tacx training tyre in tribikes today for €40 and going to bring the rs10 to my LBS after work to put on a cassette for me which should set me back about €30. So for the €70 I'll have a long-term turbo solution and not ruin my Ksyrium SLs and GP4000s's which I can stick on for the weekend road rides! Thanks for the input lads.

Risk of p******e is high from a used outdoor wheel on the turbo as tiny bits of dirt or glass work their way through the tyre. IMO it is worth the hassle to change them. It is also cleaner. I agree with the poster about excessive wear. You should get better traction too if you have resistance in the turbo.

Got the cassette fitted yesterday and the tyre and used it last night on the turbo. Went well. Had to release the brake pads on the rear as they were rubbing the wheel (is this simply because there may be a slight difference in the wheels?).
