It is impossible to give an accurate answer without knowing all the details.

Is this an insurance job or not?
What kind of body shop is doing the work?
Exactly what parts need replacing? Is it literally just the bumper or are there other bits of trim needed as well? It is quite rare that you would get away with only a bumper in these situations.
Are the parts new or used?
If new are they genuine Mercedes or spurious?
Is the car a Classic, Elegance, Avantgarde or Sport model? (there are a few different bumpers)

Basically on my way to work I reversed into a parked Mercedes e200 compressor 2004 , the hitch hit the bumper wnd basically there is a lot of damage to the left hand side bumper which will almost definitely need replacing , it may need a bit of a paint job too ,

Well you are pretty much at the mercy of whoever owns the car in that case. If they go to Mercedes for a quote then you are looking at a four figure sum for sure.

Could it cost 3 to 4 k, how bad would my insurance be if they paid for it

It shouldn't cost that much no. I would guess at €1200 or so but obviously that is pure speculation without seeing the damage.

It would be possible to get it fixed much cheaper by going somewhere other than a main dealer but that is outside of your control now unless the owner of the car is very reasonable and allows you to choose where the car gets repaired.

Do you have any pictures of the damage?

I think a bumper for my audi is 650 and a further 300 for the grill (audi dealer prices). I can only see mercedes E class prices being more expensive. Add painting on top of that and you could easily be over 1500 if going through mercedes garage.

The grille is in the bonnet on the Merc though. I'd say the Merc bumper would be cheaper than the Audi.

The basic bumper cover for a W211 Avantgarde is €189.50 + VAT retail for a spurious part

Obviously painting and fitting will be extra on top of that.

But then there are loads of other bits that may or may not be needed depending on the damage (all these prices are for spurious parts and are ex VAT)

    Bumper reinforcing bar €179.50
Impact absorbing brackets (one per side) €49.50 each
Bumper bands (the trim with the chrome strip on each corner) €49.50 each
    Centre lower grille €36.50

Then there may be damage to a fog light - €69.50

Main dealer prices will most likely be substantially more than the above.

So really without seeing at least a picture of the damage it is impossible to give any kind of semi-accurate quote.
