Do both have their own Jobseekers claims?

Not yet, wife is on JSA and has been accepted onto BTWEA.

I'm currently on sick leave from work and prefer being self employed. I see an opportunity to provide a service that compliments her business but would be a stand alone business. If my employers deems I'm not fit for purpose I understand that instead of going on JSB I can go straight onto the BTWEA if I qualify.

If your employers deems you not fit to work then you may not be allowed to claim JSB unless you doctor gives you a fitness to work cert as you have to be available for work and actively seeking work to get JSB.

You can only go from Illness benefit to BTWEA if you have been in receipt of IB for more then 3 years. If you have only gone on to IB in the past 2 years then your entitlement to IB will run out after 104 weeks and you will then have to; go back to work, get a fitness to work cert from your doctor or apply for Disability Allowance. If you do get DA then you can apply for BTWEA but there is a very long wait for DA at the moment and if your household income is not sufficient you must apply for Supplementar Welfare Allowance while you waiting.

I think a call to your local Citizens Information Centre might be a good idea.

Can't see a definitive answer on the welfare.ie site. A family member worked for Citizen Information and she's not sure either.

    Might try my local partnership.

In order for you to qualify for BTWEA for your own business, you would need to meet the qualifying criteria for the scheme based on your own claims.
If you are qualifying from Illness Benefit you need to have been in receipt of this payment for three or more years, or you can have been in receipt of a qualifying payment for three years or more (if you are using a combination of claims on which to qualify).

The simple answer to your question is yes both partners can get paid full BTWEA, however you must take into consideration all of the points made in previous posts regarding transfering from Illness Benefit to BTWEA. Your best option might be to go to your local Social Welfare office and make an appointment to talk with the Jobs Facilitator. They will tell you exactly what you can or cannot get on BTWEA and more importantly if you qualify for that payment.
