There was a book that was made into a Made For TV movie back in the early to mid 70's with the title, "The Catholics".

I remembering reading it and watching the movie. Is there anyone else who remembers either?

I have searched the 'net for any info and can't find any. Therefore I wonder if my memory serves me correctly.

I would appreciate any help as I would like to read the book again.

    Thanks

It isn't this, by any chance, is it? Never heard of it before, but it sounds interesting, with a good cast, including a pre "Apocalypse Now" Martin Sheen.

Brian Moore's Catholics is a novella (just over 100 pages), and it now seems to be out of print. Moore was born in Northern Ireland in 1921 and emigrated to Canada in 1948. He became a Canadian citizen, and split his time between Canada and California, where he died in 1999.

He wrote some good novels, including The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne (filmed with Maggie Smith in the name role), The Colour of Blood (nominated for the Booker prize in 1987) and Lies of Silence (nominated for the Booker prize in 1990). More details available from Wikipedia.

The film version of Catholics was originally broadcast on ITV in their Sunday Night Theatre on 14 April 1974, which was Easter Sunday (see details at imdb.com). It starred Trevor Howard (who was making a speciality of playing Catholic priests) as the Abbot, as well as Martin Sheen and Cyril Cusack. Lower down the cast list was a quite young Michael Gambon.
