In off licences most definitely, it's probably "go down" in pubs, as in there'll be 30 cent less duty, but the pubs won't pass the saving on. When Lenihan was in and dropped the price of a pint by 50 cent I didn't see one bar do so.

So you're saying we should get up to Dunnes by Wednesday to buy the entire Christmas stock? :D

The more they increase the price, the more people will go up north, the more patriotic complaining from the government to spend your money here.

    It's pure stupidity.

By the way, here is the Beoir pre-budge submission.

A common misconception. Any increase in alcohol DUTY (as opposed to VAT) should not be seen at the tills for some time - it is not a sales tax. When they increased duty several years ago, it emerged that Tesco, among others, had in fact built up something like 6 months stock which they then sold at the "increased budget" price (blaming the govt) but were actually creaming it off themselves as extra margin. Any place that ups its prices come Thursday is likely ripping you off!

Absolute overkill if they do, and it will have little to no effect on overconsumption and binge drinking which is what the Government will claim they are trying to address.

Reminds me of something I once heard about Vodka in Russia.
It was proposed that the price of Vodka would increase, a reporter then asked a randomer in the street if this would mean that they would buy less Vodka. The person simply replied they would continue to buy the same amount of Vodka (if not more to drown their sorrows) but that they would buy less food or clothes.

    Well thank you for that.
