LeMond to run for UCI Presidency

Only US Tour de France winner says it is “now or never” for cycling

Greg LeMond has revealed he is ready to take on Pat McQuaid and run for president of the UCI, after being asked by the anti-doping movement Change Cycling Now.

    http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/lemond-to-run-for-uci-presidency

I feel like we're so close to a tipping point for the sport, with everything that's been going on. And now the possibility of a complete regime change. Please just let it happen!

TBH, if someone like LeMond runs, it would not make sense for McQuaid to even put his name forward (even assuming he could get the required nomination)

Now does LeMond have any Irish ancestors? Can he get an Irish licence? If so, maybe we would arrange an EGM to nominate him;)

Doesn't your opinion show how far cycling has fallen in reputation? McQuaid is in charge or has been senior in the UCI during this collapse. Therefore, a new person must take over. Lemond has a reputation for speaking out against dopers and unless he is an amazing liar is putting his good name at risk. I would support Lemond for head of the UCI.

Normal doping speculation rules apply, which means your post, joker77, is both off-topic and contrary to the forum charter

    Thanks

As an aside, I have met Greg Lemond on a few sportives. He took time before to have his photo taken with everyone who wanted. He also spent about an hour with us afterwards in the bar giving us a rundown of his falling out with Trek after we showed him Youtube footage of his climb of Alpe D'Huez on a phone. He interrupted an interview he was giving to a well known cycling magazine to do this (we were unaware of his commitment).

I thought he was a great representative for pro cyclists and if you saw his thighs even now you would know why he was built to be a cyclist.

The job is mainly requires administration skills (as well as power-play politics to get elected, of course). I'm not sure what LeMond's record in administration is. In fairness, cycling ability and a change crusade is enough for the job.

No confidence petition is online now.

The sport needs a figurehead it can trust to oversee the change required - the Admin side of it can be delegated (although the politics probably can't)

Interestingly Oceania has just elected a new head who will sit on teh UCI management Committee. She looks like another one who is committed to change (in the right direction!)

The petition won't be used for any legal purpose.

I honestly believe the winner of NEXT year's TdF will b clean...every other winner is tarred by 'heard it all b4' brush

Why doesn't LeMond fit into this bracket as a previous winner?

He does, but being 'tarred' and being 'guilty' are different things, joker.

Apparently Bernard Hinault's wife kept texting him to hang back. It was before race radios.

I've had a read of this http://inrng.com/2012/09/how-to-replace-pat-mcquaid/ again and there's no clarity there on how you get nominated or selected to run for president - I'd be interested to find out if a Federation has nominated LeMond considering he's said ..

“I'm ready. I was asked and I accepted,” LeMond said. “If we want to restore public confidence and sponsors, we must act quickly and decisively. Otherwise, cycling will die. Riders do not understand that if we continue like this, there will soon be no money in cycling.”

If it's just the CCN movement has asked him to stand it's about as useful as me asking RobFowl to stand for president without backing of a federation. They may find themselves unable to get into the process of attempting to be president if they don't box clever on this, you've only to look at the Irish Presidential election to see how hard it is to get a nomination even before attempting to get elected.

The situation is your home federation needs to nominate you. If US cycling has nominated him then he is up for election but I think its the CCN who have asked him.

Either way this can only be a good thing.

If Lemond gets in it'll be a brave new start and a chance to properly clean the sport up.
If the establishment win, then we'll at least know where we stand, and can switch to watching cleaner sports like pro wrestling.

No such thing as the "real" me, I exist only in my own imagination.

I wouldn't share Ashenden's optimism given the muted response to Armstrong's demise from current pro's.

Hard to know isn't it. UCI in damage limitation mode - immediately getting in touch with them after the press conference.

I've been a little uneasy about some things I've read about it.

I'd agree with a lot of what is said here:

why Change Cycling Now needs to dump Vaughters
how does that make any sense? how are these guys amongst our guiding lights? how is it that the press, like so many sheep, trot off to Millar and Vaughters every time there is a positive in the peloton? how have these two become pillars of the ‘clean’ peloton?

it says a great deal about the state of this sport that this is the case. as an indicator of the health of cycling, if you consider that over the the past three or four years we’ve not had anyone other than Millar and Vaughters within the peloton to look to for any sort of anti-doping leadership, well, it tells you in a second that this is a sick sport.
