    Hi

I have a new snowboard, which I was thinking of taking up to Kilternan next weekend to try out - does anyone have an opinion on the carpet/surface there - does it damage boards and skis?

as far as i know you should not bring your new board unto artificial piste (the Brush type ones) as it ruins the coating by all means go to killternan but use one of the rental boards and keep your own board for the snow.

BTW I have not been in kilternan in about 5 years maybe thay have a new surface that you can use your own board on.

    there are 2 slopes,

one 'baby' slope which would not damage your board at all.
the surface is very soft and spongy bristles.

then there is the larger one that will make sh*te of your board.
definitely do not go near that with your new board.

The simple answer is YES. Petex (The base of your board) is a soft material and not designed for dendix/Snowflex.Railing unique to dry slopes the world over the heat caused by the mat heates the Petex and the edges of the ski causing expansion and a gap between the petex and the edge & the wearing away of layers of Petex. Best advices is use the free rental stuff or run the risk.

cormee; Ski Club of Ireland has two surfaces

Snowflex; the new softer surface. - It will damage your board but not as badly as the Dendix. It is less likely to scratch or gouge your board. But railing will still be an issue. When your edges run over the surface they generate heat which transfers to the Petex on your board, softens it and wears it away. Railing can be fixed buy a base grind but you will only get 5/6 of these in the life of a board/skis

Dendix; the traditional surface. The same issues as above, but slightly more extreme, also you have the added risk of gouges form the wires tying the matting together.

Of course if the winter keeps getting colder then maybe you can ust waiti a few weeks until it snows and then go to Kilternan :D

The ski centre place in Stillorgan has a carpet scenario (it's literally a carpet) - I'm sure it's pretty safe to use your board on it.

Not really the Ski Centre will not let you use your own equipment unless you completely DeTune the edges to protect the carpet.

This means that after you have used them in the ski centre you have to go to the effort of servicing your edges from scratch again.

Thanks for the replies, all. Have decided to err on the safe side and just wait for the real slopes to use the board.
