Would like to know if anyone else agree to this thought. We have the right to select our life partners, to select and follow our own religion, similarly shouldnt we have freedom to choose our own name when reaching a cetain age? Why do we have to live with a name that is given to us since childhood and in some cases we may not be happy with that name.

You can call yourself anything you like, provided it is not for criminal purposes. I know two people who call themselves entirely different names from the name on their birth certificates. Formal documents are still in their real names but all social contacts are in their chosen names.

This can lead to slight problems occasionally, so if you want to prevent that you would have to do the deed-poll thing. That would lead to explanations about such things as education documents so it might or might not be helpful.

But the short answer is there is nothing to stop you changing your name.

Deed poll is just to simply state in a legal sense that you renounce your previous name, and will no longer use it.

You can change your name to whatever the hell you like then.

    Mr. Batman Bin Superman please!

Possibly because your name impacts on so much documentation and "how" you are known.
Changing it can be a pain in the behind for a number of reasons.

You have the freedom to give yourself fifty first and last names if you like. Not common, but you're free to do so.

Max Power, he's the man who's name you'd love to touch!
    But you mustn't touch!
His name sounds good in your ear,
but when you say it, you mustn't fear!
'Cause his name can be said by anyone!

my concern is changing it without hassle as we do other things, changed automatically everywhere without we having to take an extra effort which stops most from doing it and living with two names.Even society doesnt accept this as easily as they accept other things

But there is a lot of hassle involved. It would be impossible to do otherwise.
How many legal and otherwise documents/bank accounts etc would need to be changed to reflect a name change?

all those has your given name on it :)
everyone has their name registerd with the main authority, PPS number, passport, ...
It should be automatically linked. No importance is given to this which shows what kind of demand and attitudes are observed towards this thought.

I won't ask you your new name but what did you change it from and what was your motivation? I'm not mad about my first name, but I think I would have to change it just before moving country to have the desired effect.

I love my name, but if I didnt I would have no problem changing it. I know a few people who have!

Yeah I changed my surname by deed poll, but was asked by the solictor if I wanted to change my forename too.
Deed poll is a looonnng and expensive process imo.. I had to live as my new name for a year, before anything was officially changed.
Also, my passport is still in my old name, and when I tried to change it, the guard signing the form wouldnt recognise a deed poll as a "legal document"
So I have to book everything in my old name. :

I've never heard of any of this? Once the Deed Poll is done, that's your name.

You'd want to get back onto the passport office and get it changed!

I did a deed poll, it took about 3 weeks, and I didn't have to be known for the name for a year I could change everything straight away. When I went into the Garda station they stamped my new name not a bother and I got my passport back within 10 days.

I think the particular guard you got was a muppet try a different station, if not a Deed poll is a legal document an the guard has to accept it.

I have heard of other people changing it quickly too. I think there was complications with the reasons my name was being changed.
But besides that, do you not encounter trouble with it. (Ie people like that gard who are clueless) I think it was getting a credit card or opening a joint savings account was difficult. My credit history was in my old name, and when they asked had i gotten married, I showed them the deed poll, and most of them were like "aw i dunno what that is"

It has several legal, financial and other practical ramifications. It isnt a simple case of just picking a name because we can select who we can date.

    Well, they were right.

It is more commonly used to change last name's, but not exclusively.
