My daughter drooped out of college last year with the idea of taking a year or two off and then going back, she got a job in a large supermarket chain and she likes it, she is at the stage where she is thinking of going for a supervisors positions and staying in the supermarket or going back to college next September, if she goes back to college she is not going to apply for the supervisor's position as feel she would be messing them around if she not going to stay and go in to management.

She is flip flopping about what to do on the one hand she feel she will regret it if she does not go to college on the other hand she like retail management. My feeling is that she should stay in the supermarket as I think she will end up doing retail management anyway as she likes her job, now on the other had its the only real job she has has and at times she can have unreal expectations of what the other jobs might be like plus she does not want to work as a supervisor in all the different departments of the supermarket because she think why should she and why can't they let her stay in the area she wants to which indicates that she is a bit to immature and maybe should go to college for a while she is thinking of doing business studies. I do not know what to advise her.

If it was my daughter, I'd advise her to go back and finish her studies.

Although I think she should go back to college, I also think that she should stick with the job, just so that she can learn how businesses run. That, and it'll look good on her CV that she was a supervisor for a while before she went back to college, if she ever went to work in a retail job again.

I would encourage her to study part time and continue with the job.

I was in the same position as your daughter 12 years ago. I decided to stick with the job. I stayed with the big supermarket till they made me redundant in 2006 as the sold up. Today I sit in an office owning my own garage. I got the retail bug and loved it that I wanted more and more. I do think sometimes think what if I went to collage and persued my other dreams but then I look at my friends mostly unemployed and they all performed better in school than me. Most large retailers offer to pay for further studies if they think you have potential. I done that and studied retail management and HR both paid by my previous company. Get her to check out her options and sit down with the manager of the shop she works in and see what they have to offer and what they actually think as to what level your daughter can achieve. If the company is any good they will be honest and not mess her about and she will know what is the right path for her to choose.

She should go for the supervisors job and see how she gets on. For starters she might not even get the job. If she does get it, September is a long way off and 7 months in the job would be great experience plus would help her decide what she wants to do re college. Her worries about messing them around are very naive as the supermarket wouldn't bat an eyelid at laying her off tomorrow if it suited them.
She has nothing to lose by going for the job, but plenty to gain.

I think she should go for the job either way as it'll be great experience. If its something she's enjoying doing she should make the most of it, the majority of people don't go to work because they like their job but out of necessity. Education will still be there if she decides to pursue it in the future, never to late to be a mature student.

I also agree she needs to get a qualification.

I got my masters while working full-time. I erronously picked a horribly complex topic as my thesis (and came out alive) so I can say with absolute certainty that it is possible to work and study at the same time.

Having an education opens doors. For example, you can't legally work as a foreigner in China, South Korea or Japan unless you have at least a degree. I know your daughter probably never wants to work in these countries, but it shows people value degrees, no matter how much of a moron the degree holder is.
