    Hi,

I have been living in my current accommodation for 15 months now and I have just been told by my landlady that I will be receiving an ESB bill today. I have never received one yet; i had assumed that it was included in my monthly rent. I have had 2 housemates in this time, and i know they will be hard to contact in relation to it. Am i legally obliged to pay this after such a time lapse, or is this normal?

    Kind regards,

    M

    Two questions:

    1. What does it say about this in your lease?

    2. Does the property have an electricity meter?

And a third question when you get the bill:

    3. Whose name is on it?

    question 4
did you take a meter reading when you moved in (you should always do this, preferably agree it with the landlord).

You're not liable for it if it is not in your name, but surely you'd pay for the electricity you used...?

Why did you assume it was included in your rent? Had you grounds for this assumption or was it just wishful thinking?

You should of course pay for a service you used, but what the hell is your landlady playing at with only telling you now. Is the bill a combination of all the bills since you moved in? If so, she will just have to put up with you paying back in installments, as it's hardly fair to expect you to pay it back in a lump sum. And you need time to contact those who were living there with you and since moved out.

At the same time though, it is your responsibility to ask about stuff like utilities when you move into new accommodation, instead of assuming all is in order.
