Passat Dual Mass Fly Wheel?

My 08 Passat is giving this knocking sound the past few week and based on some older threads on here it appears to be the Dual Mass flywheel issue... press the clutch and the noise goes away.

Would this cause and issue with the car starting?

One question... This car has 90K miles on it. I would have thought it was a bit soon for a problem like this to emerge?

    08 Passat? TDI I takes?

A friend of mine has one and it went, 140 highline. Took the starter (bendix) with it too. He got into the car one evening and it wouldn't even turn the engine. Cost €800 to replace both along with a new clutch.

Then the crank snapped in 2....

We'll it didn't start for the wife this morning and it being towed to the garage as we speak. (the garage I bought it from 2 years ago)

I had a problem starting it on Saturday but my local mechanic called up and we eventually got it going. He then gave the car a service and mentioned it could be dirty diesel. He did comment on the clicking noise in the engine and explained the DM flywheel issue. It started fine all weekend after that.

But would it hell start this morning. Maybe I have 2 separate issues here, DM flywheel issue and dirty diesel/fuel pump issues.

    :(

The DMF on my own Passat (2.0 TDI version) was "rattling" at idle for a good while before I got it changed but didn't do anything like you're describing. Mine also had/has a lot more miles than yours.

Has this only started recently because if so I'd be thinking it could be something else - you mention "dirty diesel".. do you use any of those "cheap" unmarked places at all?

Wifes car so god knows...

Sounds like separate issues alright. The DMF one will have to be addressed at some stage anyway I suppose.

Would put me off buying a VW again to be honest... Was the original fly wheel design not good enough for them.

My sister has a 04 accord 2.2 litre that she bought new. She had to get a manifold welded in 2007 that cost a few pound but aside from that she has spent zilch on the car and it has 90K miles on it now.

    Think its time to change...

Every modern diesel has a dual mass flywheel. There is no getting away from it no matter what kind of car you buy. VW don't make the flywheel, they are made by Sachs or Luk who also make flywheels for every other car manufacturer.

The Passat flywheel is actually among the cheaper ones to replace, try getting a few quotes for flwwheel replacement on the likes of a Mondeo, Accord or Avensis and you will find that they are more expensive to replace than your Passat.

Thanks George, as you can see I know very little about cars.

Fair enough, will have to suck it up anyway see what happens.

I'll post back when I get to the bottom of the possible dirty diesel issue.

Have a look at http://www.scribd.com/doc/33265704/Dmf-failure for all the information you could need. Down at the bottom it looks like 3/4 of the failures are down to thermal problems ....how this could be the customers fault is anyones guess

I had the DMF go in a 05 Caddy at about 45,000 kms and after I sold the 06 Caddy the chap said he had to get it done, under warranty, crazy stuff!

It's worrying to see more car adverts with "flywheel replaced at xxx miles " I noticed this when looking at autotrader.co.uk looking at golfs and Audi's. Sure it isn't unique to the VAG.

Most of them seem to go after 60,000 miles.

One reason I'm a Prius driver now and I'll never go back to diesel, too many problems!

This thread has brought up some horrible memories, i bought a passat in a private sale (got a mechanic to check it out, he said it was fine) i had it about a week and the clutch went, mechanic changed the clutch for me and i was back on the road. One week later the clutch goes again, i'm on the other side of the country so i bring it to a local VW expert and he says that the fly wheel was gone, that it should have been changed with the clutch and that the wrong clutch was used (spurious) and that he would only fix it using official VW parts. All together it must have cost me 1700 euro to fix. I was sickened.

Sorry for the slightly off topic rant.

luk or sachs dual mass clutch + flywheels for the 2.0 model are between 5-600e including vat

a dmf should last around 100k but just depends on the driver
i have saw cars last 200k

    Ok, I am back.

Turns out that the diesel pump was gone and also there was a sensor that needed to be replaced. 415 Inc VAT to get all that sorted.

So now my dilemma is should I trade this Passat or spend money on it in 2013 to do DMF and clutch along with the timing belt? The CD player and the air con no longer work either!!! Not happy with VW at all.

I have looked at a 2011 Mondeo Zetec with 40K miles on the clock and I can trade the passat against this for 9500 euro. I am leaning towards this deal at the moment. I'd have to spend 12K to get a passat with similar mileage/spec...

The way I'd look at this is if I were to spend the money on your current car, you would know what you have in terms of new parts. With another car you never know what's about to go wrong with it.

With a new tb and clutch asy you would have peace of mind that these were done. Would you have that with another new car?

As for A/C and CD player, I wouldn't worry as they don't affect the car reliability wise...

Good point. The owner of the Mondeo is from a neighboring parish and is in his 60's. So I'd say the car is legit in fairness.... but you never know for sure of course.
