I am looking at a 2011 Range Rover Discovery Commercial. Im coming out of a 2008 BMW X5 Commercial.

Opinions, reliability, associated costs, resale. Any thoughts?

    Land Rover "Discovery".

    Land Rover "Range Rover"

    Land Rover = Brand
    Discovery/ Range Rover = Model.

As for the rest of it, I'm sure someone will fill you in rather quickly.

If you're coming from an X5, I assume you'd be looking at a Range Rover rather than an LR Discovery. If you're looking at a Discovery, I can't really see the point unless you're trying to get one of the new 5 seater crew cabs. The latest X5 still looks fantastic imo, I wouldn't even bother upgrading to a RR from one - and I'm a huge RR fan.

In the X5 for 5 years, looking at a change. The range rover is mad money and not cheap anymore, plus the engine is a 3.7, whereas the Disco is a 3 litre.

I work on both and being honest the new range rover and discovery are the same chassis and all and are very bad for suspension parts failing i mean even at 2011they are failing secondly the engine is now changed from the bmw engine to the new ford engine. Personally i think when theses start blowing turbos and all the bill will be massive so my advice is the new bmw is alot more sought after and reliable then the range rover.
If you need any more info feel free to ask

As you are getting the newest facelift Disco, then I suppose I can see reason for moving. All the pre-2010/pre-2011 Disco's were as basic as can be. They are quintessential workhorses and are not in the same league as the Range Rover or X5. The new ones seem to be coming far better equipped and are starting to feel a lot more Range Rover-esque inside.

Personally I would still prefer an X5 to a Disco (even with the difference in age), but it is down to your preference and your choice.

    Personal preference on diesel commercials would be as follows;

    1) Range Rover
    2) Mercedes GL
    3) BMW X5
    4) Audi Q7
    5) Range Rover Sport
    6) Mercedes ML
    7) Land Rover Discovery

I don't think that the RR being a 3.6 makes much of a difference in any respect as it wont have much of an affect on insurance or tax being commercial, but obviously the price difference is the main factor, depending on what you are looking to spend.

The new Disco looks a lot smarter with the recent facelift, but I still think its beginning to look dated as it'll soon be 8 years old essentially, bar the few cosmetic changes. No idea when they might replace the Disco with a completely new model, but I think that the X5 and Q7 still look quite up to date. Range Rover will be replaced next year, so will Mercedes GL. RR sport replaced c. 2014, probably same with X5. Mercedes ML is new this year.

Range Rover Sport and Discovery are the same chassis but full fat L322 Range Rover and the new L405 is a totally different vehicle other than some engines.

This will change next year probably, the new RRS will be based on the L405 platform and replacement Discovery will probably follow on the same platform. Jaguar and Land Rover are supposed to be rationalising their chassis types from 11 to 3 shared platforms.

There's no such thing as an official RR or RRS commercial, Land Rover won't build them as it doesn't suit their luxury image. Someone the other day claimed to have seen a RRS commercial though

Out of all those listed above only the Discovery is available as a factory commercial AFAIK, since 2010 commercial conversions by importers are not allowed, they have to be factory built.

Land Rover Ireland have also managed to get the 5 seat Discovery and Defender station wagons classed as N1 commercial.

You've never seen an RRS commercial? Here's one of them on the market, and there are always plenty for sale:

It also happens to be post-2010, so presumably the rule you're referring to does not exist. I always assumed you could convert what you want to commercial as long as it fulfils certain requirements - never heard about them having to be factory built.

I doubt Mercedes factory build ML commercials to serve the Irish market, either, yet here is a 2013 one:

    Think 'official' bit is important

All commercials now have to be factory built. I had a look at the new 5 and 2 seater discos. Lovely machines, but I think with the change in the VRT laws etc, the 5 seater will no longer be available. Also with the change in the VRT etc, it actually puts up the cost of a commercial when importing it from the UK.

The ruling is an EU one on VAT and the Revenue used it to stop luxury vehicles being imported as commercials and consequent loss of VRT and VAT.

You can wreck commercialise a nearly new one that's already been registered as passenger and full VRT paid although they're throwing more obstacles in the way.

Like I said, Land Rover no longer make luxury commercials and haven't for some time.
