Mate of mine has a 03 mondeo diesel with over 310,000 miles on it. It is very poor to start even on warmer temperatures. It usually takes 3-4 attempts before it fires up. He is wondering is there anything he can do with it? He doesnt want to change it at the moment if he can.

Battery is relatively new and glow plugs are fine according to his mechanic.

The Mondeo are usually very easy to start. Has it become noisy lately? Could be the timing chain tensioner

Sounds sluggish after starting with a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust but runs ok then then after warming up.

That indicates it's getting fuel, just not compression. Have you double checked the battery and glow plugs? Despite the battery being relatively new, I'd be getting it load tested.

Have you checked the connections to the battery? Colder weather would make metals contract so any gaps in the connections could be loose or even let in moisture which would increase the electrical resistance?

Does anyone you know have a fresh battery? Switch over and check. It's a 3 mins job.
