I have a few cows due to calf in the next week but I have noticed I have no tags left. So I will have to order ones. But will I be made BVD test these if I order a batch of tags??
Thought it wasn't til January but if i order new tags now will they come with a BVD testing kit? Im confused on the whole situation.

I got non bvd tags in the post the other day to cover me until Jan.
You wont have to bvd test a calf until 2013

Ordering new will take close to six weeks by which time it will be January and your calves will be over 23 days and that your next dilemma.

its messy enough i think, i sent off my first set of samples today..sent them to enfer, i dont know why they (dept) didnt factor the price of the testing into the cost of the tags and avoid having to send cheques off with sample or set up accounts with the lab in question

with enfer send off a cheque to cover a good few animals, they will hold the money on account.. i use enfer but money is deducted from my glanbia account... for my dads sucklers he sent in a chque for 50 euro early in the year to cover his samples.... the reason the testing money isnt included with tags is that there are a few companies doing the testing

ya girl i was tlaking to said she would set up account for me which means you get charged 3.60 as opposed to 3.90 i think
anyway i tagged all my autumn calfs there at weekend so i hope i dont have the fecking thing, its my first time testing for it except for 2 sick calves last year..

Whelan, the Glanbia test is 3.40 isn't it? I havn't seen anyone cheaper out there yet, the Glanbia one is probably the easiest for us with no messing with cheques etc.

In general they may be a bunch of hoors, but that is a very good service.

Plus it's great to have one year done of the screening period.

I guess the thought of having to destroy 'perfectly good' PI calves has put the frighteners up some people all right.

Bar the extremely unlucky case, it's to the benifit of us all. Especially those who cannot for whatever reason run a closed herd.
Touch wood had none last year and will have none this, especially when we gave to buy in replacements for cows lost with tb. :(

Hadn't thought about it yet, will have to check how long the blood test takes.

I think there are a good few mainly older farmers out there who, how shall I put it, might be a bit slow with the paper work. To avoid getting a nasty letter from the dept along the lines of ''calf no xxxxx cannot be registered because dam no zzzzzzz has had a calf registered to her, no xzxzxzxzx less than 300 days ago''

People got around this by not registering calves until a year after the previous calf was born registered;). Now they have a problem, they have to register and do the bvd test within 7 days of birth.

I wonder could IFA look for a once off solution to this problem?

Maybe i have mis-read what you are saying but if you have young calves now that your not going to test and you will test everything from january on, then your just been short-sighted in getting full benefit from the scheme. If all calves test clear from this crop then you will have some peace of mind, but if you carry a PI for a whole year, your just asking for trouble.
