Hey lads. Has anyone fished the lakes around dromore woods or Inchiquin or just the Fergus itself in between for pike and how did ye get on. Have trawled the internet and found out very little about them. I have stuck to sea fishing upto now but the temptation of catching a big pike is getting to me. I know these waters have pike in them but I dont know how to approach fishing for them. Any info would be great lads. Any fishing I would be doing would be from the shore too. I have a preference for lure fishing but wont rule out bait if I thought it would bring me more success.

I've also found info hard to find but I've gone down once or twice from Galway to check it out myself.
Many of the lakes here are very shallow around the edges and from asking around you seem to need a boat to make the most of it. I've thrown a lure out at the Amenities area at Inchiquin and west from there towards the river outlet but shallow water and weed growth made it pretty much a waste of time. Ballycullinan and Cullaun look to be the same deal.

I'm sure you can rent a boat though if you ask around Corrofin though....

    Hey Redser
Theres a lot of big pike in the areas you mention, but, as Fixer says boats(or kayaks) are needed for some of the lakes, but there are still a few you can fish from the bank.
Lures work well from poppers to deep divers but a popped up deadbait will take fish all year long.
Some great fishing north of Ennis; Corofin-Tulla-Broadford area
Small, sometimes private lakes holding big tench and pike.
    Where are you thinking of?

I was mainly thinking the corofin and dromore area because it wouldn't be too far away from me, I have very good sea fishing on my door step for the summer but it's brutal in winter so was thinking a bit of pike fishing might suit. I have planned to get a kayak in the next month or 2 so might give it a go then. Haven't the faintest idea about pile fishing or the type of ground they like so any tips are appreciated.

The river Fergus in Ennis is good for pike, and I heard the Inagh river is full of small to medium size pike

How ye lads, my new fishing kayak is being delivered next week and I might go for a paddle on Inchiquin the following weekend to get the hang of it. I have no pike lures and wouldnt mind having a few casts around it so could someone recommend me a few lures that are good for pike :D

I didnt know there were any pike in the Inagh so thanks for that, very hard to find any info on the internet about it compared to the sea fishing in the area.

Bar your handy in a kayak I wouldn't be bringing a rod with me on the first trip. The kayaks take a bit of getting used to. Great way of getting out there though. Proper gear makes all the difference too!

I was going to spend an hour or 2 practicing my self recovery and things first bizzum before I watched my rods going into the abyss. I had a good test run on the same model I bought before I took the plunge and I felt comfortable enough on it. I went for the ocean kayak trident 13 angler, new drysuit, new pfd a paddle and a spare paddle so I have my safety covered for a small lake i think. Will need a few more bits before I head to the salt alright though.

I've been thinking about investing in a kayak myself :D The ocean going ones look good and should have lots of stability especially on a lake so with a bit of care you should be fine. If you could PM me the details on your Kayak - where you bought, price, cost of extra's and all that I would appreciate it. :)

As Lures go, some of my favourites are the Alcocks Extra Heavy Silver and copper spoons, from 1" to 3" depending on the depth, the Flying condom red with a silver or gold spoon, Soft Rubber jigs like the ones used for Pollock and the likes work really well too as do hard plastic (often floating) plugs. Some lures are meant to catch the angler rather than the fish so beware!

As with any type of fishing if what you're doing isn't working then change your tactics..... Varying your retrieve rate, Lure depth (always starting from just off the bottom), trying different lure types and colours and covering as much water as possible will all improve your catch rate.

Its always a thrill when you feel the power of a big pike on the end of the line so I wish you the best of luck! ;)
