The Internet Has Made Me Not Trust People Anymore

The more I look at Facebook, look at forums and see how vicious and 'brave' so many people are behind the keyboard makes me realise how dangerous many people are behind the facade of social respectability.

When you see a celeb or someone attacked on-line - the hatred is shocking. Usually for the great cimes of shagging another woman. It is so personal. Like these people really do want to kill a fallen celeb or other well known person. The humanity of the public figure is completely dehumanised and no consideration is given for their families and children. You look at that Perez Hilton lowlife. He makes fun of the young children of Hollywood stars calling them ugly and goofy. These are real children and he is a grown man. Yet millions eat this stuff up.

It makes me understand how the great genocides, religious persecutions and witchburnings of the past took place. If many people behind these computer hate fest were alive in the Middle Ages they would be involved in Pogroms and burning of heretics.

The internet has made me dislike humanity for the most part and I trust no one I haven't known in real life for at least a few years.

I'm not a follower of Perez Hilton but I do know for the last two years, he has vowed to end his special kind of bullying in response to the suicides of teenagers who were bullied online. He's a good example of someone who was guilty of atrocious behavior but he is also a good example of someone who recognized their own role and has taken strides to correct it.

It's the really hateful, racist, homophobic comments on youtube videos that puzzle me. What sort of degenerate gets off on posting that stuff.

Sounds to me he only "cares" because a Gay teen was bullied to death.

He is a nasty piece of work.

Millions are doing it. You want to worry about the future of humanity look at the comments left to that young girl in the USA who killed herself.

Not a pretty vista at all.

Some lad robbing my BMX when I was 10 did it for me, the internet did it for you OP. Different causes, same effect.
Everyone has an "angle", once you take that as a given, things get less surprising. Some people are awfully nice though, but they're quite scarce.

Hmmm... More *people* ironically saying *people* are sh1t.
What about friends, family? Surely you trust them? That phrase involves no thought. It's just "I'm so misanthropic - I'm cool" emo sh1t.

It's true that some truly monstrous views and bullying are the result of the internet (rape as funny now is becoming accepted - and any objection makes you a killjoy don't ya know) but it's only because of the anonymity, the physical distance, the lack of policing and the lack of consequences. Most of them wouldn't behave like that in real life.

OP's right. People suck. Anyone trying to say otherwise is attempting to sell something. Normally religion.

Selling nothing. Just not seeing the logic of people condemning themselves and knowing damn well plenty of people are great.

There is no reason to have faith in humanity. People suck. Anyone who thinks otherwise is concocting some little fantasy world to live in. For every good deed like someone returning a phone, someone gets assaulted or raped.

Look at Africa. There are entire countries where 1/4 of the female population (both adult and child) have experienced rape.
That is what happens without the benefit of a modern, structured society. That is what people are like at their core.

Our society is precariously balanced and should it ever tumble, then we will descend into the same hell.
And even if it doesn't, we live in a greedy capitalistic society. All you have to do is look at these boards to see the number of people who would save a few euros in taxes by cutting off aid to famine stricken areas.

And even more just don't care in general but would know more about what's happening in x factor than, well pretty much any country in the world.

Most people are arrogant, self-serving superficial creatures.

So yeah. Don't have any faith in humanity because as a species we suck.

This. I've seen a video of an online bully being tracked down. Turns out the tough man was just a teenaged boy venting online. Broke down crying and that was that.

If people acted in person like they do online you would have to step over the bodies on your grocery run.

But here's the thing. If they could act like that, would they? I think some people are just acting out. But i think a lot would be like that if they could. There's plenty of little scumbags out there.

The Internet is a dangerous place full of lies and deception. Apparantly it's actually not appropriate to try and bone someone who has a problem with the photocopier.

Has the internet not recently spread the ideal of democracy in Arabic countries? A new media that exposed the oppressive regimes in all their 'glory' and a media where democracy supporters communicated with each other, within their countries, the Arab and muslim world and the entire world for that matter. With the fall of three regimes that were relics of the Cold War.

I get what you're saying, and I think people are kept in line by society. But people online can also lack empathy because they don't see a human target at the end of their rant. I think the latter trumps the former.

We only get truly vicious when we're part of a group. My own experience was that real @rseholes are quite a rare find.

your average person has 2 personas, their public persona and their private persona. When we are given a certain level of anonyminity on internet chat forums we are wittnessing people's private persona. Many people's private thoughts can be shocking, this is why we would never hear anyone speak them out loud publically, or there would be bloodshed.

It is similar to the idea that people always tell little white lies, or lie by omission, so as not to directly offend anyone.

    Speak for yourself. ;)

I see what you're saying - that without the boundaries created by society, people would be a lot less civil. But aren't those boundaries of decency created by people? I think you're letting the bad overshadow the good - we're still capable of empathy, compassion, humanity, etc; things other species aren't.

In the societies you mention, it's because of a minority of power-grabbers, who have the majority cowed into submission. Maybe you're right to allow the bad overshadow the good, because in many societies unfortunately evil trumps good; but that's through fear, not people wanting it.

I reckon your point isn't the one being made by those who indulge in the teenage whinges of "Dude, people, like, suck."
