I'm going to suggest some subtitled films as options and a few are slightly older than you specified.

The last war film I watched was City of Life and Death which is set in 1938 and concerns the rape of Nanking by the Japanese. Its not an easy watch but I think it is handled very well and does have an uplifting ending.

If you are will to look beyond WW2 then this Korean film about their War is excellent with some breathtaking action scenes. The film I am talking about is Brotherhood about two brothers fighting on either side in the Korean War.

Finally I'd recommend Days of Glory which gives the perspective of the North Afrian troops who fought for France during WW2 and again is a thought provoking film.

Its a couple of years old at this stage but Werner Herzog's 'Rescue Dawn' was just brilliant. Really unconventional war film, and Christian Bale plays a blinder (Some of the character acting in that show is so great as well) Plus you get all of that crazy film-making, felt more like a documentary than a movie.

Dutch film "Winter In Wartime" from 2009, modest budget but well worth a look, some good twists. On Irish and Canadian Netflix:

Might be too old but The Dirty Dozen and Where Eagles Dare are good.

Is that the film that has a really long orchestrated sequence where the German army I think are attacking civilians and burning buildings? Very brutal scene, but expertly choreographed.

Yep, Stedicam job, amazing film, one viewing is enough in any lifetime though!

Yes the army attack on civilians in Belarus is very brutal, but brilliantly put together. On IMDB it's described as a Soviet Union film, in other sites it's described as Hungarian? Scary film, especially as it is deemed to be based on real events during WW2.

    1. Black Book ( Zwartboek )

Excellent dutch film about the Nazis in Holland during WW2. And it stars the lovely Carice Van Houten ;)

    2. Grave of the Fireflies

I watched this last night. Its about a teenage boy and his young sister trying to survive in WW2 Japan. Its animated, don't let that put you off though, probably one of the best films I've ever seen.

+1 on Black Book and excellent film.

Also have a look at Max Manus, another one based on a true stroy set in World War 2

"A Woman In Berlin" is another, recent, excellent German WW2 film based on a 1950's book written by a woman it happened to about the widespread rape of German women by the Russians after the fall of Berlin, tough going in some parts but well worth seeing. (On Netflix Us and Youtube)

Doesn't meet your 'made in the last three or four years' criteria but definitely find time to watch Stalingrad. It follows a group of German soldiers who gradually fall apart as they realise they're way out of their depth in freezing cold Russia. One of the best and most sobering war films I've watched. Really does address the mental horror of war.
