Insurance query

I hope someone has some experience that can help me.

I've driven company cars for the last 10 years or so, handing back my last car in Sept of last year.
I've been named driver on my wife's car for about 3 years.
The last time I had a policy in my own name was around 2001.

I now have to get a car for myself, as myself and the missus can't share the one car. I'm probably going with an '03 Golf 1.6 Manual that I've gotten my hands on.

    35yo, full clean driver's licence for 12 years+, no accidents/convictions etc.

I've gotten an online quote for insurance for €450ish, and got another through the AA for €260.
Upon discussing my details with them, the best quote they could get me was €550 because I don't have any driving experience in my own name, and the primary driver experience I had (company cars) expired over a year ago.

Apparantly, if I didn't have a few years of being named driver on the wife's policy, I'd be looking at €1,500ish for insurance for the first year!!!:eek:

Anyhoo, does anyone know of any brokers who would typically deal with drivers like myself - "mature and safe", experienced with no accident history, but with primarily a company car insurance history?

As as secondary question, I've also got the possibility to get my hands on a car that qualifies as a classic, so could go down the classic insurance route, if that's liable to be cheaper.
Any recommendations of people to call?

You should be able to get a letter from your employers insurers stating your driving record. I've done this in the past when changing from company to private insurance, without a problem.

You probably won't get full NCB, top whack will be about 50%.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I am a named driver on my wife's car (with no policy of my own)

I got a classic car added to her policy, with me as a named driver (but driving it myself every day). Paid €325 fully comp for a 5l V8 >300BHP sports car :)

This construction was suggested by First Ireland. Give them a call if you're going classic!

Maybe give Arachas a shout. Being a broker that deals with a lot of coporate stuff they should understand the situation. Whehter they can do anything better than you already have though.....

€550 doesn't sound too bad. Think it's around what I'm paying with full NCD.

Think for classic you need to insure something else and have the classic as a 2nd car. It's possibly not the best idea to have a classic as your day to day - you could more or less gaurantee it won't work when you really need it.
