Saleable classics?

    Hi all,

just looking for some quick advice and pointers.

(Mods, please note that these are not for sale. I need advice. Hope that's ok. Kind rgds)

My father passed away a few months ago and, regrettably, we are having to tidy up affairs and maybe sell on a few vehicles.

Any opinions on going rates / demand for : -

    An Audi 80 B3 1.6td, NCT'd 1991. Irish car, about 120k miles I reckon.

A Golf Mark II, 1.6 petrol, 1989. Good condition but not NCT'd for a few years now. Garaged. New tyres etc. Needs some engine work.

He also had a Fordson Major and 3 Nuffields but that's for another forum. Plus a David Brown 990 Selectamatic which I'll be keeping and running.

I was going to run the Audi 80 as a classic but the tax is still around 480 for that pleasure IIRC.

You're falling between two stools with those 2 cars especially with the golf.

They are not old enough to be a whole lot more valuable than a 12 year old equivalent .

However it's very hard to get old diesels that might qualify for cheap 20 year old classic insurance plus the Audi s only a 1.6 which makes it desirable .

So I'd say 2k tops for the Audi and up to a grand for the golf but maybe only 400. Check out the vintage section on donedeal.

I'd say your estimations are a bit strong, even at that. An Audi of that vintage would have to be in exceptional condition to get 2k and a petrol engined mk2 Golf (non-GTI) in need of work, the floor's the limit. Have a look on autostadt.ie and vagdrivers.net, both of which are at the heart of the Irish VW/Audi community. There's a mk2 Golf 1.6GL Automatic (well-specced for an Irish car) for sale on autostadt.ie for months now at around the €400 mark and no interest whatsoever.

Do you have any means of preserving the Audi for a few years? Values will pick up for decent examples over time. Don't park it in a field and think you're preserving it though ;D

My two cents ,You can get a very good a4 B5 for well shy of 2k , I couldn't see an audi 80 1991 being worth anywhere near 1k even as its nowhere near cheap tax age.
The golf , not exactly rare , not a classic , not a good spec , unless the shell is mint couldn't see it worth much more than scrap value in reality.
The prices you see other examples advertised for doesn't mean they are worth that or more importantly sold for near that.

That 1.6 audi will be a stronger seller than some people here think, but at around 1.5k, and to be honest its a car id want to hold onto. There a good enough car for a daily driver, and actually nicer than the first of the tdis. If it must be sold, id try donedeal, and register on the irish vag forum and put a small advert but they'll know its monetary and rarity value. I know id prefer one to the 1.6 straight diesel jettas people are paying stupid money for.

The golf is probably scrap value, but id donedeal it for €500 and if its still got a layer of dust leave it on for its photos 'barn find with small work' and see what you get.

    Thanks everyone,

great replies. I figured as much with the Golf. It is in surprisingly good condition however, inside and out.

The Audi is mechanically v good, NCT'd etc but needs some paint work and has a few dings. As others have said, genuinely lovely to drive and good as a daily driver. Its just thta my daily driver is a 200K HDi Xantia. We tend to drive good cars on :-D and these are only broken in.

Thanks again for the advice. If we are selling, I will go with the advice given re other forums and of course also in the correct thread here.

My first car was an Audi 80 that I drove for years. Loved that car.

Sad to say at that age I agree with the others in that it doesn't have enough to offer at the moment to get anything decent for it. :(

    Do you have a pic?

A4 tdis are well on the route to the scrap yard in the sky, a good 80tdi esp an avant, and to a lesser extent a 1.6td is going to be desirable if you can wait.

To compare a 95 on tdi a4 is not apples with apples yet. A petrol 80 of that vintage is from scrap value up, but the td will rise long before the still common a4.

It will be a long time before an Audi 80 TDi will be anything except an old diesel , same as a A4 B5 tdi for that reason it is apples with apples at the moment and the B5 is a better car as a daily driver. Can't ever see the Audi 80 becoming a highish value classic or the A4 tdi cause theyre not very desireable for any reason except as an economical daily driver.

The B5 rs4 is modern classic and already good ones are rising in value cause they're an awesome machine..

The scrappage schemes of the last 15 yrs will skew your thoughts, far more b5s will survive than 1.6tds.

Not to mention the low tax mentality that will make that 'old diesel' desirable for far longer ( even if it is only €3 a week less to tax than a 1.9 )

And a rs4 aint even in the same food group let alone tree

Exactly and therefore desirable with potential for an increase in value . The 80 1.6d is and never will be desirable .

And those beetles are scrap, and as for those outdated mk 2 escorts........(thoughts of many a man in the mid 90s)

I witnessed the deaths of many mk1,2 escorts, and many many other cars which are now widely regarded as classic, and many more that have vintage status.

If you had filled a barn with free /£50 escorts/bj40s/name your toyota etc etc around 1995, or lodged 10k in aib shares, where would you be now.

The 1.6td audi is desirable as a cheap/cheap tax daily driver, and if minded one day will be a desirable classic to some. As will a b5. But the b5 is more likely to survive. Because in recessionary times, scrappage schemes are not going to be exchequer funded, and broke people keep cars going longer.

How many 1.6tds are on the road now? How many 80 tdis? How many b5s? Do your own maths.

By your logic a rs2000 escort is desirable but a 1.3 is scrap.

I agree, id prefer an rs4.

But a car has to be viable. And some of the nicest classics out there are not the performance models.

As the owner/driver of a 1.3 Escort, I must disagree that 1.3's are scrap......

Seeing as I am the OP, it's more appropriate that I am asking you.....

The link to the turf trailer?

Well, I see your point. But its actually a link to what I said. Nuffields and a Fordson Major. Via a turf trailer ;) Although I was going to change the main photo and will do so now to avoid further confusion :pac:

Photos of the classic cars to follow when I figure out if I can post images directly here or now need to link. If so, I will link the cars from Autostadt asap.
