Not sure if this is the right thread but I'm looking for info on something. I bought a soccer jersey off Ebay & I was told that I could have to pay import charges by the post office, is this true?

If it is, is there any way to avoid paying it? i.e getting the seller to post it to a business address? I heard that could work.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Congratulations. You cast your net for information. Sadly you picked a stagnant canal - you're more likley to catch an old boot than a top tip, but let the slagging begin. Did you buy this in another country for example? Or are you importing it to Dublin from Mayo?

Support your local LOI team instead. No import charges there ;)

What size is the jersey and does it have a number?

It's ex-large and has an 11 on the back. Does that make the postage dearer? Or is there a customs dodge on medium jerseys? Adverts.ie is also somwhere else. i was half expecting you to make an offer for it there.

If your jersey is being shipped from outside the EU, customs could stop it. If they stop it they will hold it until duty is paid. No way round it.

If its coming from within the EU it'll be grand.

Seriously though, you posted this in AH, are you mad?? :D

Try not to worry about it. Customs have bigger fish to fry than a jersey coming from hong kong!

Your not the OP! Go and get your own thread. I won't post in it.

The thing is An Post won't give it to ya until you pay the charges!

I'm after buying half of china on ebay in the last few months(not quite half:o) and have never been asked to pay anything extra.

One parcel came opened alright it was a bulky one but it was in another wrapping inside, I just assumed customs had checked it but other than that there were no problems looking for cash etc.

If its marked as a gift there's no issue.

Bought 2 shirts off ebay for my 2 sons. New to boards I didn't know where to post, I just thought with this forum being one of the more popular I would stand a good chance of getting a reply.

    Cheers.

Not only could you pay customs charges, An Post will kick you while you're down by charging for the extra delivery...

You didn't offer asking. It's all to play for still. Anyway OP, just get it posted. More chance of getting struck by lightning than charged anything for bringing in a jersey. Unless it's a cow. In which case, posting might be cruel/difficult.

Altogether they cost $76 including postage & both are being sent by the same seller. Is there anything special I could get the seller to write on the package so it passes through ok? i.e someone suggested getting the guy to mark it as a gift.

Firstly you're massively overpaying. It should be around £13 per jersey.

It should be marked as a gift with a low value.

Marking it as a gift doesn't work...if it was that easy nobody would be paying tax on anything coming into Ireland...you have to pay it and trying to avoid paying it is illegal. I've imported a load of stuff, the only sure way to not have to pay it is to be below the €22 threshold where tax kicks in and they will still occasionally open packages marked below €22 euro and price it themselves and tax you accordingly, if you're bringing in an item and undeclaring its price on the box..they are within their rights to seize the item for good..remember that.

But if the seller is sending the package from his home address using his real name then all I can say is that they're christmas presents sent by a relative. I cannot be liable for charges then can I?

Yes. These people are dealing with packages being imported day in day out...they've heard all the bs excuses.

Post back here if they put your jerseys through a shredder:pac: But seriously...you might be ok, lot of packages moving this time of year and if it's smallish you might be ok...they've been clamping down on imports a lot more over the last year.

They aren't fake jerseys, they are US college jerseys that I bought because we visited the college during the summer & my 2 sons wanted them.

Just before you do have a look at this. The gift limit is €45 "customs value" which is the price of the items plus the postage/insurance The duty is calculated on that total.

If you're going to pay for postage and risk customs you may as well go for the Chinese ones. They are made at the same factory and come with tags.

    Use this business address
Block D, Ashtown Gate, Navan Road, Dublin 15.

No way to avoid paying it unfortunately :( The charges are set by the government, not an post. If you think that they are charging you unfairly, you can contact customs (they will ask you for proof of what you paid) and they will go through the charges with you. You can also query the charges AFTER you have paid for and recieved the package.

If it is being sent to you, then yes, you are liable for the customs charges. It doesn't matter if its a gift sent by a relation, or something bought from a total stranger on eBay. If it is worth X euros, then you owe Y customs duty tax on it. If Customs open it, and decide that you owe them money based on their perceived value of it, or they see the value declaration on the outside of the package, they won't let you have it until you pony up the money.

You'll get a note on your door from An Post asking you to pop down to your local sorting office to pick up a parcel that they couldn't deliver, as customs duty is owed on it. If you pay it, they'll let you have it. If you don't, they'll only let the parcel sit on a shelf for so long (30 days I think) and then they'll just send it back to the sender, or destroy it.

Thanks for the response guys, if I do get caught what am I likely to pay if Ive paid $76 all inclusive? If its only €10 or €15 then Id pay it but any more than that & I'd feel very aggrieved. Worst case scenario I do get caught for charges do I just call down to the local sorting office? They don't hold the package in a certain place or is it based on locality?

It should be your local sorting office. Or they may use another depot (with more space) seeing as its that time of year, and they are probably swamped with parcels arriving from overseas. Either way,the note from An Post will tell you where to go.
