Duplicate tax amount taken by revenue

    Hi,

This is a bit long but please bear with me!

Having registered as self-employed last year I submitted my first tax return (on a paper form 11) for 2011 this year. I completed and returned the form well in advance of the 31 October deadline and included bank account details on the Single Debit Authority payslip along with info as to how much was to be allocated to cover 2011 liability and preliminary tax for 2012.

Having heard nothing from Revenue and with nothing having been taken from my account I rang them a couple of weeks ago to enquire as to what was happening. It was confirmed that my return had been received in advance of the deadline and was "being processed".

However, about 1 week ago I received a "notice of assessment" giving a slighter lower liability than I had calculated in my own return. I made several vain attempts to contact revenue to query this only to be met with pre-recorded announcements that "we are prioritising the processing of tax returns and are unable to answer your call...please e-mail with urgent queries....".

Being unable to get through to anyone and with my e-mails remaining unanswered I decided to make a payment, to cover my 2011 tax and 2012 preliminary tax, via ROS SDI (single debit instruction). I was concerned that I could be facing charges and penalties as no money had been taken to date. This payment was made yesterday evening.

However, after checking my bank account today, I see that Revenue debited my account yesterday afternoon for the higher amount that I had calculated on my form 11!

Presumably, this means that the payment I made via ROS yesterday evening will also now be debited on Monday morning.

Is there any way to cancel the SDI payment made yesterday?

Why would Revenue issue a notice of assessment stating that I should pay the specified (lower) amount immediately (we're only talking about a difference of 200 euros) only to then go ahead and debit my account based on the form 11 which they have had for over a month?

This is my first experience with the self assessment pay and file system and, to be honest, it seems crazy.

Could anyone suggest how I should proceed?

    Thanks

Revenue have been slow to deal with your case. They can only make the SDI for the amounts that you put on it.

You have now instructed them to take more money. Perhaps ring your bank on Monday and see can they refuse the RDI. failing that contact revenue and explain what has happened and ask them to refund the overpayment.
