Contract Length Dilemma

    Hi,

I applied for a job at the start of November/end of October that was a 6 months contract and they were looking for someone to start pretty quickly. I didn't hear anything back, even after following up with the company, so just presumed I didn't get it.

They're after coming back to me looking for me to interview, which is great news.

My dilemma is that I have an IEC (a 12month working holiday type visa) for Canada that if I want to use I have to activate (go to Canada) by the middle of June. I can apply for a second visa once I do activate it which would be 24 months in length. So effectively I could go to Canada and have no work restrictions for 3 years which with my qualifications and background would make me very employable.

I've asked the company here more details on the contract and they've said it would be 6 months in duration (as opposed to a contract possibly up to 6 months) and there is a bit of a chance that a permanent role could come out of it.

Now I'm just wondering should I mention anything about my Canadian visa in the interview? At this stage I'd imagine that they wouldn't want anyone starting before Christmas so the 6 months would take me until the end of June, which would cause problems with the visa.

I don't want the Canadian visa to expire and then end up out of a job here but then equally it could mark me down in the interview if I mentioned it. Also I could book a return ticket to go over and just activate the visa and then fly home for early June for 500e.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Do the interview.

    Don't mention travel plans.

They woudl let you go in an instant (well with minimum notice) if it suited them. No reason you can't do the same.

    Thanks for the reply.

That's true about them letting me go in an instant too.

It's a bit weird how they've gone about it as well. As mentioned above it was the end of October/start of November when I applied and the ad implied they wanted someone to start very soon if not right away. I rang and emailed a person from HR but never got a reply then out of the blue I got an email this week from a senior engineer asking about interviewing me. I would have expected a phone call to be honest.

Over a 6 Month Contract you would be due some holidays (10 days?)

    Take the job.

Once you are in the door tell them that you have booked a break at the end of May.

    No Problems.

Take the job, don't mention Canada. Leave on nice terms in May, and goto Canada. Never mention the visa as the reason, in case you ever have to come back to work in Ireland...
