I have a 07 Seat Altea XL and i need a new case for the key.
The loop for holding it onto a keyring is broke and no amount of superglue ect is holding it on.

Can anyone point me towards somewhere that i can get a new shell, as id rather not have to pay the €120 i was quoted for a new key.
Rather not use ebay as id been burnt before on there.

Jims keycutting and shoe repairs beside Tesco in Maynooth will get you sorted for between 60-80 euro.Very good at cutting car keys and will swap all your electrics over.He has the blanks there for those keys,

You only need a new case / blank, shouldn't cost more than 10-15 euro.
Your existing cut key, immobiliser chip & remote unlock transmitter can be swapped over very easily in less than 5 mins.
Can you post a pic of your existing key?

I had that issue. Buy a pre owned key on ebay and go to www.riskin.org/vwkey

I know you said you wanted to avoid e bay but there are lots of housings on it for small money like this one http://www.ebay.ie/itm/VW-flip-fob-3-button-remote-blank-key-golf-polo-HAA-/330820500321?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Safety_Security&hash=item4d06703b61

You then just swap out the remote transmitter from behind the buttons. If it's only the bit where you clip your keys on that is broken you can just put the head of you old key on the base of the new one. No need to swap the key blade or immobiliser chip then!

Got a case and flip key for an 07 golf on ebay. Just swapped in the clip transmitter and actual cut key, and it worked a charm. Think it cost me €20 incl delivery.

I drilled a hole in the corner of mine and put a string through it.

Please tell me you don't do your own car maintenance....

Also it's not good for these keys to have a bunch of other keys hanging from them. It can damage the spring in the flip part. This can move the immobilizer chip away from the ring at the ignition that reads it and causes the car to cut out. Not nice if your in the middle of overtaking! Will also depend on what way the key is in the ignition. Rare but it can happen!

    :D

Haven't been to a mechanic in eight years...

I think you have to drill through the opposite corner to the silver button. 1.5/2mm bit.

I was afraid of loosing the key as more than anything

Sean, I'll have to disagree with you there, on my own car at least the immobiliser chip is only read at startup and is not required to keep the car running.
I've started it with the chip outside the key and removed it so am 100% certain on this. May not be the case for every VAG vehicle but I'd be seriously surprised if there are models that keep checking for the chip.

Back to the OP I have one of those housings that Sean has listed from ebay.
I bought it but it was slightly the wrong model for my car so only used the metal key blade / button off it.
I'll happily post it to you for €5 if you want it.
