Funding for courses?

Just wondering if anybody has any information in relation to this.

I really want to start a course in February, but it is privately run and will cost 1500 euro. I have been on Jobseekers Allowance for a couple of years now and have done a number of courses in that time but they have mostly been through the local adult education facility and have been funded by Social Welfare, but would have only cost perhaps 100 euro.

I'm just wondering if Social Welfare, or even FAS can offer any assistance towards paying for private courses.

It is two days per week for 22 weeks, at the end of which I would have a full professional qualification as a Make-Up artist.

Will be dreams be quashed by lack of support yet again from this country?

Lisamd, my sister did a private course with the Irish Institute for Training & Development. The course was €500. She applied to Fas for what is called a Technical Employment Suppory Grant (TESG). It's for people just like you who want to study non Fas courses. She applied for the grant and a week later got approved. She then did her course. I think social welfare can top it up with another €500. So that would bring you to €1000.

If FAS deem the course you wish to attend to be an essential step in your Action Plan, they may fund you up to 100%

    Hi Zweton,

Haven't yet, but I'm meeting with someone next week to discuss it and I'll let you know then.

Following up on what happened today when I was in with the employment services officer (FAS).

There is one problem with my application.

At the end of the course I want to do I will be awarded a certificate, but because it is only a new course it is not yet recognized by an awarding body such as FETAC, ITEC etc. FAS will only consider funding for courses which award a recognized certificate.

The place where I want to do the course has to be in operation for another number of months before it will be a registered course provider. I do have the option of completing the course (paying myself) and then when the course is fully recognized I can sit a short exam to obtain the FETAC cert.

I don't mind holding out until then to do it, hopefully I can find work/another course to bridge the gap until then.
