Does anyone know is it confirmed when katie taylor is fighting next in Dublin? It's either the 18th or 25th of January

Nothing confirmed as yet. Possible opponents include Chantelle Cameron or Natasha Jonas of UK but Queen Underwood has told her social media fans that she will not be the opponent in January.

They are looking to maybe get a top ten opponent from the 64 Kg division. Not sure I agree with this.

Why should Katie be giving anything away? Why not go for someone lower and ask them if they want to rise in weight to box Katie?

Ok, if Taylor rises in weight to 64 I have no real issue. Or if the 64 kg girl drops to 60 I have no issue. But Katie's division is 60 kgs. She should not be giving away an inch to anyone just for our enjoyment and entertainment. No ifs/buts. Now, she probaly will still win, but that is not the point.

True but from another point of view a new challenger can only give her a good workout. Losing means zero so there is nothing to lose in these exhibitions.

    Losing means zero?

Jeez, it would be a massive disappointment that the golden girl lost on home soil in her first fight after the gold medal. Massive disappointment.

Get a good workout from girls in her division, or girls rising in weight. I don't think Katie should be giving away anything to anyone. No matter how good Katie is.

BTW, I don't believe it's an "exhibition." It's a real fight. Folks paying 40 euro and above for the night.

I am quite sure that it will be a 60kg opponent such as Turkey's Gulsum Tatar, Olympic bronze medallist Adriana dos Santos Araujo or GB's Chantelle Cameron who was quite keen on such a bout when last I heard.

Only IF they cannot get a suitable opponent at 60kg will they consider 64kg but in all honesty there is no one at 64kg who is likely to want to come to Ireland or is well known outside of womens boxing circles.,apart from Tatar who varies between 60 and 64 and world no 1, Mikaela Mayer of USA who is most unlikely to be interested since as with the Underwood situation is involved in their own Nationals at that time.

No bout involving Katie is an 'exhibition' - that word was used by spokesperson for the promoter I'm told and most likely was used to indicate that no championship or title was at stake.. Of particular interest is fact that no one from iABA has been involved in these bouts nor so far have they been mentioned on iaba.ie

Indeed the Irish Elite takes place also in February and IF any other boxer enters the 60 kg division then the proposed bouts would not be Katie's 'first fight in Ireland since Olympics'. Last year as we will recall one did enter and is officially the titleholder so who is to say she or another won't do so again?
Off fact that Katie only holds 2 Irish Elite titles (2010/2011) both walk overs yet 4 world,5 european,4 european union and Olympic crowns).

As I'm sure most now know, the word "Amateur" is being removed from the sport during 2013 though those who remain with teh AIBA will be eligible to receive payments in tournaments such as WSB/APB and remain eligible to compete in Olympics whilst non-AIBA Pros will not. 'The times they are a changing'. So no more IABA, which will have to be re-named after 101+ years history.

Suggests that relationships between Pete Taylor and IABA are anything but smooth just now as indeed the Indo's Vincent Hogan indicated earlier in week. Difficult negotitations ongoing re the coaches futures it seems.

Meantime Katie picked up the 2012 Irish Times/Irish Sports Council's 'Sportswoman of the Year" award as expected yesterday.

Personally I'm a little disappointed by the choice of venue for this event.

It has a capacity of just over 2,000 I personally think they should have been more ambitious and gone for a bigger venue.

Katies fight is being shown on RTE along with 2 other fights from the national championships.

(81kg: (Light-heavyweight) – Joe Ward (Moate) v Ken Egan (Neilstown)

60kg: (Lightweight) – Katie Taylor (Ireland) v Karolina Grazcyk (Poland) – Non title fight

69kg: (Welterweight) – Adam Nolan (Bray) v Willie McLaughlin (Illies GG)

    Best quote of article:
Egan is the most decorated Irish boxer of his generation, with an Olympic silver medal, two European bronze medals, three EU gold medals, ten Irish titles and a stunning stonewashed denim jacket to his credit.

Never live that jacket down :D

I thought the scoring was a bit too generous for Ward. I am not seeing it with Ward. Yes, strong, tough and capable, but I think he's a bit overrated. A little too predictable and sloppy. Egan has been an absolute gem for Irish sport. One of the truly great amateur sports men we have produced.

Funny enough, I've been saying to people that if you were to get some knowledgable boxing folk from the US (or wherever) who didn't know any of the Irish amateurs and told them to watch the Irish seniors and pick out the lad who was only 19, but winning his third title v an Olympic silver medallist, was a World Junior champ, World Youth champ and European Senior champ at only 17 - I don't think even one would pick out Ward.

However, the bottom line is results!

And he just keeps beating people.

Having seen him thrice hitting Kenny Egan (a very, very good defensive boxer) with pretty sloppy looking punches over and over again, I personally think his timing and judgment of distance are fine-tuned to a ridiculous degree, but they're not the sort of traits that are obvious, even to boxing fans. We get all worked up about speed, flashy combinations, fast footwork, the sort of things Ward will never be known for, but he just hits peope and seldom gets hit cleanly in return.

Agree totally with your sentiments on Kenny.

Any info on Katie's next fight scheduled for Castlebar on Sunday March 24th?

I'd love to go as only an half hr drive for me but wondering is there a couple of good fights on the undercard.

Might not be worth paying €30-€50 for just one eight minute fight. Even though it's an Olympic champion.

Would appreciate more details if anyone knows more. Thanks

I think he's an amazing boxer and I think he'd meld easily into the pro-game and go on to achieve great things. The lad's only in his teens and he's already making a huge name for himself in boxing. He fought a ten-times national champion and dominated him easily including dropping him, and while I didn't see their second match up it seems he did the same again. Egan is a great boxer with a lot more experience and he couldn't score points off Joe at all. I think he's one of the best talents produced in recent times, and to be fair walshb, the results speak for themselves.

I'm going along to the WSB in Bethnal Green on the 22nd and we'll see what he gets up to on the night.

I haven't seen much improvement since he beat Egan in 2011. Egan has certainly regressed, as is expected. As mega said, he is winning. That is the real matter. He is world class, I know this, I just am not as excited about him as others. I think he may be overrated by some.
