BMW e60 525i : low coolant, low oil

    Hi All

    I intend getting it checked over but in the meantime I hope someone here can help me understand what might be causing the following issues;

    - coolant needed to be topped up approx 700km ago and again tonight.
    - engine consumes approx 1l of oil every 1500miles
    - occasional 'clunk' sensation from somewhere under car rather than tge engine when stopped in traffic in gear

    All searches on net suggest head gasket issue but i can see/smell no oil in the coolant, the engine hasnt lost power at all and the oil cap doesnt have milky gunk on it. I had a good look under the bonnet tonight and did see some liquid on the engine tray but couldn't get at it.

    What do you think are the range of possible issues? Just a leak somewhere or suggestive of something more serious?

    Cheers.

    there must be a coolant leak somewhere as it really shouldn't need to be topped up ,would need to be pressure tested to check if there is a small leak. The oil consumption while high wouldn't be outside limits

    As above it sounds like your just burning a drop of oil and you have an unrelated coolant leak. Coolant can evaporate very quickly. Leaks are hard to trace. Topping up 700ml every 700km would be 1ml per km. Going to be tricky to spot. I'd be optimistic if I were you.

    Thanks Ronnie. The engine got a clean bill of health at the last service (Mar 12) so I'd hope it's nothing catastrophic.
    Problem is, googling almost all engine problems results in finding a guy somewhere in the world who either a) nearly died when his engine exploded or b) spent thousands on repairs!!

    I'll look into getting a pressure test done. In the mean time I'll keep an eye on fluid levels, cheers
