Can't see the green room being closed up for some time yet, sadly... :(

The folks at Montrose probably feel that a new look for RTE2 - or indeed for RTE1, whose current ident package has lasted over six years now - is too expensive.

Should they decide to put aside some money for a makeover for RTE2, then they should also consider changing the channel's colour scheme. Why not have a mix of colours, rather than just green?

RTE have never really known what to do with RTE 2. Renaming it Network 2 was just plain stupid. I wonder how much that cost them in focus groups, PR etc. The channel is obviously targeted towards a "yoof" audience but they don't need to bash us over the head with it.

although it was alot more vibrant and alive when it was network 2 the Den ect They should make it more of its own station rather then tagging on to rte 1

The BBC are well able to differentiate between BBC1 and BBC2 without the need for over-elaborate idents and name changes etc.

The idents used during the Network 2 era were pretty good, though. ;)

My personal favourites are the "Earth, Wind, Fire and Water" ones used from 1995-7:

That said, you're right about RTE never really knowing what to do with their second channel.

It's worth pointing out that for the first ten years of its life - between its star-studded launch in 1978 and the renaming to Network 2 - it just pootled along for a few hours every day, showing little else besides repeats and cheap imports.

Also, the relaunch as a mainly "yoof" channel in October 1997 seemed to come out of nowhere.

And today, RTE Jr and TRTE (highly unimaginative names) take up almost half of every weekday. That would never, ever happen on BBC1 or BBC2 - even if there weren't any dedicated channels for CBBC and CBeebies.

Will they be getting rid of these strands now, seeing that most people should now have access to the TRTE channel?
