Hereford Prime/Certified Angus Query

I just recently applied for the Bord Bia QA scheme and passed the audit a few weeks ago, so now i'm looking at joining up to the Hereford Prime and Certified Angus schemes as these are the breeds of cattle we typically finish.

Having looked at the criteria for both schemes I don't see any problem apart form one, the criteria in both for the animal to be sired by a purebred bull or AI. This is one aspect that I'm not sure I'll be certain of complying with.

The problem here is that we buy in all our cattle, mostly through marts so how can I be sure or prove if they are from an AI or purebred bull? Looking through some of our animal passports at the moment some have the AI bull code filled in others are left blank. So i'm not sure if these will qualify.

Would anybody who is in this scheme be able to clarify?

    Thanks

    TN

Once aax or hex is on cards of animals bought in think you will be ok, there is something about max no of previous owners and have to held on your farm for certain number of days too

Thanks connormi, it would be ideal if that was the case, do you know if they ever carry out inspections for these schemes?

yes, and animals that that their daddy isnt, who he is supposed to be wont collect the bonus i.e. a white head with aax on the card would be certified as an angus

Thanks Bob, I suppose that only makes sense. I think i'll join up to them both before Christmas. Our first batch of cattle will be ready for slaughter around May so I should have plenty of time to pre book 90 days in advance.

You finish a good few cattle Bob, do you find the Angus and Herefords leave you as much profit as the continentals?
