    Sounds like head gasket trouble.
pull off the oil cap and see whats the story there.

I hope not. I just topped up the oil and everything is as normal there.

Could be an oil/coolant heat exchanger (if fitted) problem too.

sounds like a mix of different coolants. Blue and red. Flush the whole system properly a few times then fill with G12/ water 50/50.

either 2 different coolants mixed together or as previously mentioned, head gasket issue.

    Hopefully the former!

Thanks for the responses lads.I'd say its a mixture of different coolants alright. The coolant was emptied in an accident before and a different colour was used to replace it.Is it an easy job to flush out and replace.Ive never really worked on a car before.I've read that G12 coolant can only be bought in a VW dealership! Is this true?

More like dirty water from lack of coolant

When you mix G12(pink) with another type of coolant normally G11(blue) or the green stuff it forms a off colour sludge. I would recommend the OP flushes the system with a coolant flush, take it for a spin, then fresh water, another spin and then top it up with 50/50 G12+/water.
