Gas heating - valve actuator question

    Hi,

I have a question on the control valuve or actuator. Does the actuator (control valve) do anything other than let the water flow into the rads. I have 2 zoned heating. The downstairs is working fine when turned on with upstairs off...but the upstairs has lukewarm heating in the rads when turned on by itself. However the upstairs works fine if the 2 zones are turned together.

So the problem is my upstairs and Im looking at the actuator as the issue..any opinions? But it seems to be working fine. I am wondering if the actuator does anthing bar turn the valve i.e. does it affect the boiler firing and running?

    Thanks for any help.

    Kieran

The actuator opens and closes the valve automatically, but sometimes they can fail, not opening or closing all the way or even at all. Also they valve itself can pass.

Remove the actuator/s and turn each zone inn/off to check they work correctly, they usually take 20/30 seconds to open/close fully.

Good practice would be to manually isolate each zone, turn on the heat and see if the zone heats up or not, they shouldn't heat until you open them
