Hi, looking for some advice. My friend is selling a VW Golf, 1.9 tdi, 3 door. (http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4224532)

The asking price is €2,300 (although I should be able to get it a bit lower than that anyway) and her brother is a mechanic, so it would be well serviced. However, there’s nearly 210k miles on the clock.

I wouldn’t have a clue about cars – only passed my test in July and only being driving my Dad’s car since January. I rang another mate about it that would buy & sell a good few cars and he said he wouldn’t go near a diesel car with that much mileage, especially at that price. I’m thinking of going to view at the weekend and he’s coming with me.

Just wanted to know what the good people on here thought though – would ye automatically not go near a car with such high mileage as a rule of thumb?

Do ye think the asking price is high? I understand 3 doors are more sought after but it seems a good bit more than equivalent 5doors.

    Thanks!

Your link is not working for me.

I'd consider three doors less popular than five, your market is limited due to only having three doors.

When I'd a diesel I did between 20 and 30k miles a year, so I'd hit that mileage in about 8 years.

    Edit, I found the ad

it's 12 years old, so that's an annual mileage of 17.5k miles per year.

If the car has been well looked after and regularly serviced etc I'd not be massively concerned. I do think it's over priced by at least 3-400 euro.

At least you know it's not clocked. I'd be a lot more worried about a diesel of that age with half the milage.
Also it's the older pre pd diesel. There is loads of these going about with over 200k

They are a pretty well put together car despite what some here will try tell you, and and they take millage very well if anyway cared for. Price is on the high side

Hard to tell without seeing the car but going by the add I'd say 110bhp

You could surely get something of simular value with half that mileage? Even good diesels are going to give a little trouble at that mileage...alternators, starters, suspension etc..

As could one at 100k clutch, dmf, turbo and suspension would be all getting worn around that millage. At least at higher millage most of these will have been replaced. Again its down to service history

Would find it hard to get that money on the open market. Buyers are slow to buy cars with that mileage. However if the car is very well serviced and in good nick , I wouldn't mind taking a chance. Wouldn't pay that money though:D

What your saying makes absaloute sence..I bought a petrol car last Xmas eve with 140k miles on the clock as the owner advised me over the phone it was kilometres (l would never have gone to look at it knowing it had that mileage).

All my previous cars have been under 80k

Ended up buying as it was so crisp..had absaloutly no service history either(so so clean though)
Still have the car today and its driving like it has 60k on it..:-)

I still have a thing about high mileage cars though..I always feel there has to be an alternative..like slightly older car..lesser spec etc!

It's a 12 year old car. Anything could be wrong with it. Cars of that age need to be judged on their individual merits on a case by case basis. The mileage should only be one of the factors taken into consideration IMO. It simply isn't possible to judge a 12 year old car just by looking at the mileage figure.

Unfortunately most Irish motorists have a massive hangup about mileage, even more unfortunately most of them don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to judging the condition of any given car....

Is it just me, or is this a €700 car going for a lot more because of its badge?

Hi Stheno, I agree. I'm not sure what I'm agreeing with, but i usually agree with stuff you say, so I'm going with my default mode!:D

Nah you're right, there is a certain badge cache contributing to that price and if you look at other golf tdis on their some are more expensive.

It's overpriced imo, not quite down to 700e, but I'd not pay anywhere near the asking
