Secondary School Entrance Assessment & Dyslexia

Sorry if this has been covered before on a thread. My eldest will be sitting her entrance exam/assessment for secondary school shortly. I assume there is a certain amount of time allocated to each part of the exam. Guess what I want to know is does having a diagnosis of dyslexia matter for this assessment. If I make the school aware of this fact will it be of benefit to her, will she be allocated extra time or is it irrelevant for entrance tests, do they just let them battle on with what they can do. Obviously the school will be aware of her diagnosis before she starts but maybe not before the entrance assessment, as enrolment night is day before the test. Anyone have experience of this?

Entrance Tests are there to give a clear picture of a childs ability and allow the resource teacher to know how many students will be coming into the school requiring additional support. Its not to 'grade' your child as the days of streaming classes are gone - be sure to ask the school if the classes are mixed ability in First Year. I would just let your child do the test and not request any additional time etc. - give your reports into the school by Feb so that the school can apply for additional support with the Dept. Be sure to let your child know that the test is for information purposes only and that there is no need for worry.

I would ask for a reader or scribe if you think it will help her.

You would need to know what the entrance exam results are used for. They may be used for banding or some version of streaming. Your child's ability would not be truly represented in such a test.

There are a number of sections to an assessment test. Some sections of the test will be visual and have no written language. Eg which image is next in the sequence. Others will focus greatly on language and literacy.

Your child may have an educational assessment giving a more thorough description of their strengths and limitations. If the school is dividing kids up in relation to ability, the educational assessment would be useful.
