    Hi,

Does anyone know when official land registry started in Ireland? I have wills dating back 100-150 years and the council are looking for land registry information to back these up. I have been told though that land registry does not go back this far. Any ideas? Thanks.

The registration of deeds in Ireland goes back to 1707, but since registration was voluntary - it was generally wise to register your deeds, but not compulsory to do so - it doesn't necessarily provide a comprehensive record of all transactions. The Land Registration system was only established in (from memory) 1892 and even now does not cover all the land in Ireland.

If you're dealing with land which is now covered by the land registrations system, older deeds relating to the land may well still be recorded in the Registry of Deeds.

If you are looking for title to land, then valuation office records show various details such as the rated occupier and landlord, which can be useful in searching for appropriate land registry or registry of deeds of records.

Peregrinus is bang on; I'd be slow to go near valuation records, they may give you a clue of what names to search against in the Deeds if you've nothing else to go on, but if you've wills you should have enough info. Anything pre 1892 will be in the Deeds, if it's anywhere.
