Mad Max 2

Saw this recently, haven't seen it since I was a kid. It's interesting watching these films now as an adult as you approach them with more loaded opinions or filmic baggage or whatever. But despite all the years of watching films and modern action films it still kicks ass. The tanker sequence remains as brilliant as I remembered it. Also it has moments of comedy like Lord Humungus' speech (couldn't dispel the south park parody) and his henchman with the mohawk being a stand out unintentionally funny character. There is something cool about this film in its use of road warfare with fast modified cars in a post apocalyptic environment. Another thing which is great is the slower pacing relative to modern action films. You're actually allowed to take in this barren scorched landscape, you feel as if you're almost there with the wide panoramic shots. Mad Max is also interesting as a PTSD/depressed character.

Funnily enough I was just reading up on this series of movies (and the new one) a few minutes ago. I think that all the humour was intentional. I showed my girlfriend this movie a couple of days ago and she thought it was hilarious.

I went out to where it was shot last December.
Just west of Broken Hill on the NSW / South Australia border.

    Its still a barren landscape!

Mad Max 2 is still probably the apex of real life danger in pursuit of cinematic art!

I haven't seen any of the Mad Max films since early 90s. I remember enjoying them hugely - particularly the first one - so it'd be interesting to watch them again to see how well they stand up.

I agree that the pacing was excellent and I loved how the bleak scenery played such an important part in the films.

I see a lot of parallels between The Dark Tower and Mad Max which is one of the reasons I enjoyed the film so much last night. Like Roland of Gilead, Mad Max is a solitary man full of melancholia and regrets in a desolate world with some technology and skills left over from the old world. Also silly question but want to ask it anyway, who would win in a fight, Bane or Humungus?

well, they are both heavily inspired by the man with no name character.

Yeah, I was out in Broken Hill a few years back too, mainly because i'm a major fan, there's a replica of the Mad Max car that a local built and a bunch of other stuff.

The landscape is the star though which is truly desolate,

    ....for hours in any direction!

It's currently being filmed with Tom Hardy as Max in Nambia, there's an ongoing thread here which only gets updated as news comes through.

Last I heard, they were trying to reign in the budget, appartently a common problem with George Millar films.

Yup, here's the thread for the new film that contains news & lots of set-photos (nothing spoilery, and the designs of the vehicles have to be seen anyway)

It's going to be a sequel apparently, not a reboot, but the traditional SFX carnage of proper stunts will be kept intact by the looks of things.

Aren't they filming two movies back-to-back?

My favourite type :), Humungus would edge it. Mind you Master Blaster could knock them both into the middle of next week.
btw MM2 is on UTV tonight 23:05.

Thinking of watching this again, worth watching them in order and starting with the first? My gf hasn't seen them and I don't remember the first one.

the first one is a bit crap in my opinion but i guess it would help get a feel for the character's background
