Dropping out of college :(

I am doing a FETAC Level 6 course having done my Level 5 last year, I really like the course work, get along very well with my classmates, generally enjoy going to college. However I suffer from longterm mental health issues, depression among other things, I am on longterm medication but recently I have begun to seriously fail to function, I am tired all the time, my anxiety levels are through the roof, I don't want to see people or socialise, I am crashing and burning.

I haven't been in college in two weeks, my tutor has called me but I am just not capable of discussing this and honestly I don't know what to say, I don't want to go into the whole thing with her. I haven't been to my doctor yet, I'm going tomorrow, we should be able to sort out a treatment plan which I hope will include a change in meds, I am going to try to gets self back into counselling which went by the wayside when I started college.

I don't want to drop out but I don't think I will be able to go back in next week, I don't know what to say to my tutor, I just feel so fragile and raw at the moment I could really do without the extra stress, I am really worried that I am on the verge of a breakdown. I am trying to stay positive, I am getting myself sorted but I just wishing could press pause on college for a few weeks while I get to a better place. Any advice?

My sister suffers with mental illness also, she is now 3rd year in college. It has not been easy for her and I am very proud of her, because the rest of us find doing courses hard enough, but to have the burden of dealing with mental illness on top of that makes college an even bigger mountain to climb.

The problem with mental illness, is it can really affect your ability to socialise when the medications are not doing there job and you can become isolated from people.

Remember your tutor is probably worried about you and may have experience with people in your situation. Go to your doctor, he will sort you out. Give your tutor a chance to help you. You don't have to explain in detail, but give her hints that you are not able to give the course 100%, but that you would like to stick at it. Don't worry if you do give up, my sister started and stopped a few courses before she finally found her mojo.
