    Chinese
    To be precise - Infinity.

When I moved to Ireland I discovered whole Mayo drives on Chinese tyres. So I though that they can't all be wrong, and I got a set of Infitiy's for myself.
Jeeeezas.. They were absolutely mad. No grip at all on wet. This was the first and last set of Chinese tyres I purchased.

If you never heard of them, 99.9999% of the time they're Chinese rubbish.

I'll never forget a car pulling into the garage bay beside me as I getting tyres on my car, i was getting Bridgstone R*** (forget the model) on a 1ltr Yaris and he was getting Nankangs on his 200bhp+ WRX. And people wonder why there are so many accidents on Donegal roads.

    Doublestar. Absolute muck

I do tend to go by the "if you don't recognise the brand, avoid it"

I didn't find infinity great either.

Also amazing how many people think sure tires are tires

Not necessarily, plenty of tires, Kuhmo and the likes that most wont know which are highly regarded. Just do your research.

Ah I'd know most common ones but you can't believe the tire guys

Ya there grand iv them on my own car.

Sur all the taxi drivers use them

    Etc etc

Very annoying when you buy new tires and they turn out to be ****.

Ones I like tend to be Vredestein, ones i dislike tend to not be Vredestein. There's Firestones on the missus's car and they're good, but I've had some awful crap fited to vans over the years, assured by tyremen that they were "great tyres, great price". I now believe unless you wince when you get the bill, you'll wince on the first wet bend you hit doing a bit of speed.

Totally agree. In fact i'd say dangerous in the wet.
With these i got understeer goin around roundabouts...at 30kph!

I ain't the only one so!

Horrific squealing and understeer in the dry, no grip in the wet. High speeds were a no no.

I gladly burned them off the car

I had Doublestars under my current car when I bought it and had to get them replaced with plenty of thread left. They were shockingly bad in wet, literally like driving on black ice. Bit of a laugh at the same time though.

had a set of "runway" tyres. awful awful yokes, average in the dry, borderline doangerous in the wet.

went to advance a few weeks ago, asked for a good brand name tyres, the only thing they had were "barums"... "but they're made by bridgestone so they are just as good".

went to fast fit, the fitted firestones for only a fiver more per corner (afair)than advance wanted for barums. happy now :)

i am very sure they told me bridgestone.

regardless, i doubt they match the quality of their parent company.

He was probably putting them on the back though, there's plenty of fellas in high powered cars putting Nankang on the back, apparently they generate loads of smoke and last for ages, they keep Bridgestone or something on front then! I have to say I like Michelin myself have found them great and Firestone are okay too. Had a few good Pirelli tyres too and a few terrible ones!

I'm not sure that is true. But either they know nothing about tyres or they have no problem lying their heads off about them.

I was looking at tyres online for my car.
    Eiretyres offer
    Star Performer HP
    Nankang RX615
    Sunny SN880
    Fulda Carat Progresso
    Nexen CP641
    Kenda KR23
    Marshal Matrac
    Maxxis MA510
    Vredestein Sportrac 3
    Barum
    Avon ZZ3.

    Camskill offers
    Vredestein Sportrac 3
    Toyo CF1
    Falken ZE912
    Nankang XR611
    Nexen CP641

Now the only brands I recognise out of that lot are Falken. So how do I choose a tyre, what is good and what is crud? All the sales & marketing on those two sites say they're all great, and indeed the grip, MPG & noise ratings are very similar across all brands.

The usual answer I guess is (like buying wine in a restaurant) go by price. Any ditchfinders in those brands?

There fine, had them on the Xantia when we got it. Never felt the need for more grip. Little bit noiser then then Verdsteins that replaced them when worn. was the only bad thing

Must be different variants of the tyre so. I was actually surprised with them tbh.

I'm not sure about the tyres I have on my car. It's cold so I've no intention of going to check what they are, but they certainly don't compare to the Vredesteins I had on the one I traded in.

I'd change them now if I could afford it, but I'll more than likely do it when they're down to 2.5-3mm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,449 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

Does anyone know anything about the stunners? I cant find anything really :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,056 ✭✭✭✭BostonB

    Roadstone, simply lethal.

At the time I couldn't get anything else. No where had stock of tyres I'd heard off. Had a set of Pirelli P600 another time wasn't impressed with those either. Problem is trying to get a decent tyre in stock at anything like a decent price is often nigh impossible. Ask for a all season tyre and 99/100 time they'll offer you some chinese summer tyre.

Or if they do give you a known brand asking for the model number and they think you are crazy.

Was spelling it wrong that's why I couldn't find it there Accelera, i've 225/40/18's on the front and 255/35/18 on the back. Would love some Michelin but at the rate I go through tyres I would have already spent 2 grand this year on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 552 ✭✭✭enumbers

This thread covers why tyre dealers sell such crap people really have no idea about there tyres, They keep asking about cheaper cheaper and even cheaper. was pricing around for a customer recently and was looking for something mid range and kept trying to get sold nakangs, infinitys etc.. People really don't no what there paying for. The new labelling system may start to help can but hope.

Accelera's are a budget brand, we sell for €75 each in a 225/40x18, Michelin in that size would be up on 160 or so!

Its all about supply and demand, People ring up pricing and 85% of people want the cheapest deal they can get! If i say to some one over the phone i have 4 Bridgestone there for 150 each or i have 4 roadstone there for 70 each.. people will choose the roadstone!

Budget tyres have only come big since the recession and trust me, garages would prefer to be selling the higher end/ Mid range stuff cos theres actually more money in it! if 1 garage starts selling cheap sh1t, everyone has to!

Until people are prepared to spend an extra few euro to get decent quality tyres, we will always have budget crap!
It all comes back to the recession

Looked at a Fiesta today with Jinyu YH11 tyres on it, I could push the tyre so much with my foot that it would roll right off the rim, this was with 30psi in it.
There seemed to be a lack of sidewal rigidity or something like that.
Another car with Jinyu YH12 didn't seem to have the same issue.
I don't think I would be trusting Jinyu tyres too much.

Chinese are notorious for bad quality control.

Needs close monitoring or it goes terrible.

Saying that Pirelli also have bad quality control.

Turns out there's Federal's on all 4 corners of my car...it's looking like an expensive February...there goes my bonus!

On the "willing to spend a few more quid comment, my mother sent me to get Conti Ecos for her Yaris and I just paid the extra myself to put Vredesteins on it.

Why is it that people do not realise that tyres are the most important component on their car. The rest of the bits are pretty useless without them. you can even use them without an engine!
