Basically I'm thinking of doing Law/Business in NUIM then qualifying as a solicitor and eventually a company secretary (definitely a long term goal that one). My problem is though, I honestly don't know where I will scrape the 20kish needed for college and then the PPC's. I was thinking that the Training Contract might help that out a bit, wondering if it's just the basic of basic/minimum wage for the 2 years?

There are a good few threads over the last number of years on training contracts and the answer is....it depends. Big firms pay trainees more than what some partners in small practices are getting at the moment. Sometimes smaller trainees can get a bit more responsibility (and a lot less money) during their contract. And once you come other side will there be jobs in the field you want? (although at this stage don't get too bogged down, you'd never know a love for conveyancing could flourish. stranger things have happened).

If you're absolutely determined to be a company secretary then maybe just do those exams themselves?

Good luck with it, anything else just post in here :)

Over the years a lot of the grants etc that enabled me to scrape through are gone, i had a part time job for a while as well which meant my social life (code for love life;) took a serious back seat but you find that if you're living out of home, working in a small firm, it can be particularly tough financially.

I would have thought that there is not much point entering the solicitor's profession if your long term goal is to be a company secretary as it would certainly put you into the over qualified category. Don't get me wrong a company secretary is very important ensuring all the relvant filing requirements with the CRO and so forth. but I would have thought it is a bit like training to be a doctor so that you can become a nurse.

It should be noted that getting a training contract is no mean feat. You'll be up against people wanting to make being a solicitor they're long term aim with relevant work experience to boot.

Yep it's pretty much min wage for the duration of your training. Some trainees get nothing and are supported by their parents. Other trainees are luckier and get more than min wage and PPC fees paid. Most don't however.

It was never easy to qualify and it's still difficult for many reasons, it's a long and slow road.

    Good luck.
