GAMECUBE Question

I was rummaging around in the attic and came across my old GAMECUBE. I brought it down and connected it up to the tv. I only had one game for it; Mario Sunshine (it was still in the console) so I plugged it all in and waited to see what would happen. The console turned on alright but after the Gamecube logo loaded up a message appeared saying:

'The disc could not be read. Please read the NINTENDO GAMECUBE instruction booklet for more information'

I figured the disc was probably knackered (I can vaguely remember having the same problem 10 years ago with it) so I took it out and tried my best to clean it. I inserted it again and got the same message.

Since I don't have any other games, I was wondering if anyone could confirm that the problem sounds like it's the disc and not a problem with the console itself? I googled it and NINTENDO state that it could be a malfunction with the console but I've no idea.

If it's just the disc, I'll prob pick up a few used GC games on adverts.

And yes, I am envious of all the Wii U talk going on and since I won't be able to pick up a 'U' until the new year, I'm going old school on it. Anyone care to join me on my nostalgic journey?

Maybe post a photo of the disc? If it looks fairly okay it might be a problem with the gamecube. Maybe the lens is dirty?

Cool, I'll post a pic of the disc tomorrow morning. Is the lens ok to clean or could I risk damaging it?

Here's a link to a photo I just took. It's hard to convey any scratches without getting loads of reflection in the process.

As you can see, there are a few light scratches but they all appear to be surface based.

The disc looks pretty healthy. If the gamecube's fecked, fancy doing me a deal on any controllers you have? :P

Could it be the lens? Can that be cleaned safely?
