Use of IT services by small businesses

Can small businesses in Ireland who don't have external IT services afford them? Every small business in Ireland would do better with the help of quality IT service, but my question is, is this kind of service too expensive for some?

    Thanks for your insight!

A friend of mine tried to set up an IT business a couple of years ago, he decided to give it up as it wasn't worth the hassle and he is back contracting.

He was good at what he did but he found it very hard to get regular paying contracts. His fees were half that of other more established guys in the area and when he pitched to local business they wouldn't give him a chance.

If he did get a job for a small business it was either setting up a network, or setting up a back up or retrieving data from a crashed computer, he would do it at a good price with the hope that he would become their go to IT guy but that didn't work so after 12-16 months of struggling he decided to get a well paying contract

Best of luck with the new business

Getting a new IT company in is quite different than your usual trades ie plumbers / electricians

Security and earning trust are only the first hurdles of becoming "the it guy"!

Agree totally, My friend new his stuff, was priced right and could do a better job than most of the IT guys that the small companies were using but they wouldn't give him a try, he even offered to do a job for free just so they could see the benefits.

I remember he did a quote for a local insurance company to put in a new scanner/document management system and for their general annual IT maintenance , he was 3K cheaper ( we know the girl in accounts :) ) than the company they were currently using, who were based 70 miles away from the premises, he was closer and could offer same day service but they gave it to their current crowd.

It seems a tough area to get in to and most small business will only use an IT company when needed.
