Need to get fitted and a decent set of clubs

    Hi
Can anyone suggest a painless way of getting fitted and preferably then buying a decent set of clubs (all-in-one).
I definitely need longer clubs but just not sure how much longer.
    Also lie etc.
I'm definitely looking at getting a decent set with maybe two woods and a driver.

The thing is i went into one of those superstores recently thinking i was made up with them looking for about 800 for Callaways (razr x- the older model, not the newest ones)(with woods) only to be told that's robbery.
Someone told me you could easily source something like that for less than 500.
    Any advice would be great.
I want to get these before Christmas.
    Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by "painless" but if you want it done properly, go to Fore Golf at Killeen Castle.

If you can get to Kinsealy range they have a McGuirks shop attached & can custom fit you for the clubs. Think I was charged 30 euro for the fit a couple years ago.

They'll probably knock that cost off if you buy clubs. Failing that, you can take the spec they give you & shop around for who'll give you the best deal on them.

What should i be expecting to pay for a decent set like i mentioned?
Is 800 excessive. I'm not looking for the very latest model but am looking for something decent (along the lines of callaway etc)

€800 for fitting, irons and woods (2 or 3?) Razr X is probably around ballpark.
Have a look online to compare the price.

Are you just new to golf?
I wouldn't go spending that money if new to the game.

You could get a decent second hand set and get half an inch added to them for half of your €800.
If new to golf, getting a cutom fit may be a waste until you have a steady & consistent swing.

    Not new no.
But playing for a few years. Just want to get serious about it.
Getting lessons (from a guy who said my swing was perfect :p -not sure about that but i'll take it).
So kinda motivated now to get a proper set (what i have now are crap and too short for me) that'll last me a bit and get better at this game.

Dave Keating in Killarney GC is your man for everything to do with fitting.

Only my tuppence worth but I don't think I'll ever buy new clubs again. Certainly wouldn't be shelling out 800 on irons. Like slightly used cars, there's just too much good value in the second hand market.

Two examples: Bought a set of Titleist MB blades a couple of years back, for winter practice. (My theory is that going from blades in winter to perimeter weighted in spring should make the game easier!! Works to an extent). Anyhow, paid 170 all in for the clubs. They were next to new.

Just two weeks ago I got my Da a set of Titleist ZMs (new in 2008) on ebay. They cost 260 all in. Again, perfect condition. Around 700 yo yos when new and a beautiful club.

Admittedly, in both cases, we were happy with specs which avoided the custon fitting element. But that can be done with used clubs anyhow, to an extent.

Check out any of the club demo days in your local area - Calloway did an excellent one at the Gap of Dunloe driving range - I got fitted up for a full set of RaZR X Irons. The golf Shop in Killarney ran the event - contact Donal Considine.

Try your own Club Pro. Best person to give the business to if you ask me.

Can your regular club pro though properly fit you without the use of technology and just observing you striking a few balls on the range? Just asking cos i hope to get fitted properly for a new driver in the new year

I don't think they can do as good a job as the specialist places. Some clubs host "Club Fitting Days" when they bring in the equipment but these are always with just one manufacturer.

My best experience by far was with Fore Golf but not sure its worth the trouble just for a driver. If you are in Dublin, Leapardstown (and I think Spawell) will do it OK. However I know someone who got a completely wrong spec for a full set of irons at Leapardstown. He suffered them for a year then went to Fore Golf and dropped about 4 shots in a month with the new set.

depends on your pro, but I know our place has numerous days throughout the year where they bring in the likes of Calloway or Taylormade.

I think though that it is the best place to start for the obvious reason..... clubs are going through tough times and best to give your own club your business.

You can always go to a specialist fitter and then get the clubs through your pro shop.
