I was out for dinner and since it was our anniversary I'm not normally a whiskey drinker but I treated myself to a glass of Middleton very Rare. It was gorgeous and I want more but at about 150 euro I just cant justify buying a bottle.

Has anyone a suggestion for an alternative in the 75 - 100 euro range

    Cheers

    Tyrconnel Maderia Finish
    Yellow Spot
Power's John Lane Single Spot Still
Red Breast 12 or 15 YO
    Green Spot

    are all favourites of mine
I also like the Connemara range but these are peated so may not to be your taste.

All the above are well within your budget.

Loads, Check out Red Breast 15 Year old, that's about 70 or the 12 year old which is about 40.

Yellow Spot and Green Spot are both very nice and under your budget (around 50 I think).

There are some nuce Tyrconnell (Port Finish/Sherry Finish/MAdiera finish) which are pretty tasty.

Bushmills have some nice stuff too, check out the 16 Year old which should be in your price range.

After thant you also have some "top of the range" Jameson, Pwoers etc, but I'm not overly familiar with those.

Take a trip into the Celtic Whiskey shop and they should help you out, even have a few of the above for tasting I'd imagine.

    Good luck with it.

Locke's 12 yr old single malt is good and only 38 euro

If you are in Galway, Bushmills 16 yr old single malt is 50 euro till Friday in O'Learys in Salthill (seen this in the beer bargain alerts thread)

Powers John's Lane Release Single Pot Still is my favourite. About €55-60 a bottle.

Midleton is an all-bourbon matured whiskey, while most of the other IDL whiskeys have some sherry maturation. Powers would probably be closest, or the Green Spot. Both have a bit of sherry but not as much as the Jamesons, I think.

The Powers Johns Lane is great. More robust than the Midleton VR. Maybe try the regular Powers 12. Good value and great whiskey.

Powers Johns Lane is a gem.Anything from Bushmills is generally very good, particularly the 16yo. You don't have to spend that amount to get a good whiskey though, plenty in the €40 ish range.

    Cheers for that everyone

I really have little to no knowledge of whiskey.

Checking out the whiskey store could be worth while.

Red breast is great value for the money.

I don't know much about Irish whiskey, I've only really had the standard well known ones but Redbreast is one of my favourite whiskies I've ever had.

So I started doing my research in the pub over the weekend and had some Green spot. I liked it a lot so that's on the 'to buy list'.

also I ventured into O'Briens and they have a special offer for the Middleton Very Rare at 115 euro a bottle which is still a bit too much for me but a good deal.

It is expensive but if you just have a sip on occasion it's still worth it imo. It'll last a long time.
Just stay away from it when drunk, I usually keep a bottle of a "lesser" whiskey about if I feel like a nightcap after a night out.

The problem is the 'lesser' whiskey is usually stored in the same place as the 'good' stuff and after a night out - there's only ever one winner. :o

I do like Middleton but I think far better value can be found if you've €115 to spend on whiskey - say a bottle of Yellow Spot and a bottle of John Lane. That seems much better value to me!

Like the other posters have said there is definitely better value with other bottles.

I received a bottle as a gift last year and though it was amazing I couldn't see myself buying it again with the choice out their in the €40 to €80 bracket.

FYI Spotted these offers on Superquinn site whilst looking for a better price than the O'Briens offer on the Middleton for you:
    Jameson Gold €60
    Jameson Select Reserve €32
    Redbreast €36

There are always offers like these in the run up to xmas so a good time to reward yourself.

Just wondering did you find any better prices on Middleton or does anybody else know of any better prices? Duty free is 119.

    Thanks

Has anyone tried the Bushmills 1608 400th Anniversary Edition.

I'm partial to Bushmills and would consider Black Bush my spirit of choice while having also enjoyed the distillery reserve and the 16 year old.

So how would the 400th anniversary edition compare. As Aldi have it on offer tomorrow at €59.99 is it worth trying or would this be better spent elsewhere?

I have a bottle of this but haven't opened it yet, got it ages ago and I think I paid around €60 for it then so I don't think the Aldi offer is anything special. It does have a nice presentation box though which could appeal to someone buying it as a present.

I think it is a wonderful whiskey and a favourite of mine but it is not in anyway like the blackbush or the 16 yo. How I would describe it (for what that's worth) is Elegantly sweet, light yet packed with plenty of flavour with a touch of spice. Think in terms of the 10yo but light years better.

In relation to a WHiskey like Midleton maybe Jameson Gold or Powers 12 (regular not John's lane)

Hi slowharry, hope you don't mind me posting a question in your thread!

My father in law loves Jameson whiskey. I want to get him a similar whiskey but a bit more 'special'. Should I go for a Jameson but the one that's 12/15 year old? Or the special reserve one? Or a totally different Irish one. I'm looking to spend €40/50. Thanks in advance!

You have a good few choices ...

For something interesting you can go for ...

    Writers Tear or
    Irishman 70

Both lovely smooth whiskeys and slightly different but in the same general family.

Closer to Jameson may possibly be Greenspot.

And closest of all Jameson Select Reserve.

All excellent whiskeys so have a quick look at the Celtic whiskey shop's website.

Just realised that the whiskey i've been giving my father in law when he comes here is the Jameson very special 15 year old whiskey...€400 a bottle!!! ( I got it from my granny RIP) Thank God I didn't offer to buy him a bottle!

Think I will get him the green spot if I can find it locally.

Yellow spot is nice too, about €20 dearer than green spot.
