Low-budget extract pale ale with LME?

I see HBW now have 1.5kg LME for €6.95. I was thinking it could be used to make a cheap extract brew.

Can anyone recommend ingredients for a 23L cheap pale ale recipe using this? Probably some simple steeping grains and hops mixes to keep cost minimal, saving some hops for dry hopping...

    Thanks!

I'd grab a pack of CaraMunich or CaraPils and steep 500g of it and throw that in with the water and the extract. Hopwise, none of my regulars are in stock on HBW at the moment. I guess I'd go for 100g of Northern Brewer. Add 25g at 60 mins, 25 at 15 and 25 at 0. US-05 yeast, and then the last 25g of the Northern Brewer in secondary a week before bottling.

I order from thehomebrewcompany too, and HBW stock might be different when people read this... so what hops would you ideally prefer?

Edit: Just realised thehomebrewcompany do 1.5kg LME for €6.95 too!

Also would one 1.5kg be enough? I've done a couple of extract brews before and always used 3kg DME.

Now you're talking! From what's in HBC now, I'd say Galaxy, Pacific Gem, Calypso maybe. You're looking for a high-alpha hop that's whole leaf and will give you a good aroma too. I really like Citra for this sort of thing, but it's sold out.

Two cans, definitely. Sorry: was assuming that.

Columbus is a great hop for pale ales and you will have plenty for a 23L batch. I would steep 300g of carapils or light crystal malt. You will need two cans of lme for a 23L batch. Have about 26L in the boiler at start of the boil and you should have roughly 23L left after an hours boil. You could reduce the final hop addition to 30g and dry hop with the 30g left over.
