Well between selling my own car private and trying to find a replacement, I am sick of cars!!! Just wondering what people think of the below passat and Superb. Are there any serious issues with them?

    Passat:

    Superb:

Have also been looking for a decent Octavia, V50, Accord, but have myself up in a heap as I know next to nothing about cars!
    All advice much appreciated!

Everyone will tell you the Superb is the better car but there is little to choose between them. The Superb is an overly big, ugly yoke, the Passat has all the space you really need.

    Which do you prefer?

Wouldn't be mad on the superb without leather interior and all the bells and whistles myself. I find it nicer than the passat. Slightly rarer too if you like to standout

Of those two, the Passat has the better 2 litre engine, the 1.9 is crap in those cars, it'll struggle in the Superb, and the Superb has almost 50k kms more on it, and is an entry model. Passat is a no brainer of those.
Aside from that, you won't get the new model Accord for around 14k, you'll be closer to 18k for a fresh enough one, if you can afford it it's the one to go for.
    Octavia is the class below.

Thanks for all the advice. My main concern would be reliability.

I had an Octavia which seemed almost bullet proof and so I would have great time for Skoda reliability. That said the Passat, is super looking but having checked on Boards.ie there seems to be alot of issues regarding reliability(DMF,handbrake etc)?

Given the amount of money I would be trying toget something as assle free as possible

The 2.0Tdi in that Pasat is the 110ps Bluemotion model, so only marginally more powerful than the engine in the Superb.

Even though the Superb is a basic model (well, Greenline that was base with aero tweaks, and the umbrella, which probably isn't there anymore) it's probably on par spec wise with the Passat Comfortline/

I've never been in a base model Superb, but the seats in the Ambition / Elegance are probably the most comfortable of anything I've ever driven, while I can never quite get the Comfortline Passat seats in to just the right position.

Superb has acres of space in the rear so if the back seats are used often, that's one good reason to go for it. 4dr/5dr tailgate it a very nice feature too.

The 1.9Tdi engine has been around for centuries at this stage and all the issues have been ironed out. We've had a few 2.0Tdi 110ps models of the Passat on fleet and they haven't given us issues. While the early model Passat's were plagued with issues, that was more or less all sorted by 2008. Only issue we're having with Passat's of that age is the A/C compressor failing, but it's happening in similar vintage Superb's as well so it's probably the same part.

I'd drive both and see what you think OP. I'm not a huge fan of Passat's so would probably take the Superb just for the cavernous rear seating area.

Skoda are basically using the VW parts bin for their cars, so there are many common components, so in theory the reliability should be similar, although credit to Skoda their quality control seems to be ahead, because they do seem to have a better record. But the parking brake was well updated by 2009 and is more reliable since. DMF's are a complaint on all modern diesels. The injector issue with the early 2 litre engines in the VW's was rectified by 2009, others on here know what engine codes to look out for to be sure you have the newer one.

True, although at some point VW started labeling all the 2 litres as bluemotion, so it's something to double check.

    Ranked outsider worth a look:

No major horror stories reported with these cars to my knowledge.

As it's listed in the description as a 110bhp, and only seems to have a 5 speed box, I'd be pretty sure it's a 2.0Tdi 110.

Thanks for all the advice. The Suburu hadn't even been on my radar! That said, we have young kids so the more space the better! Was previously advised here to hold off til the budget to see whathappens with VRT motor tax, but gettin a bit desperate! Sick of having to borrow car off family....

Bought a 2010 Seat Exeo in the north during August and with VRT came to approx. 14k. It has the better 2.0l engine and is based on the Audi A4. Worth a consideration too.

The twin door on the Surperb is handy.
The boot is like the Passat's..... most of the time....but when you need to fit something large and bulky , the Skoda can become a hatchback.

Showed that to a driver who'd been driving one temporarily for about 2 months, when I delivered his new car to him. His jaw hit the ground and he stood in awe for about 30 seconds.

Shame the umbrella was missing from that particular car.....

In fairness, the more I see of the Superb, the more I like it. I found the boot in the Octavia to be extremely useful. In fact at the moment I am using a family members Qashqai and find it more claustrophobic in many ways. Also as the Octavia was a 1.9TDI and the Qashqai is 1.5, I actually find it much less powerful and so was wondering how the newer Octavia at 1.6 compare to the 1.9. Is there a big gap in power or does the torque negate any difference?
