    Hello,
I'm on the look out for my father. He's looking to purchase a second hand 4x4. 2007-2009.

He has a keen eye on the Range Rover Sport HSE. What do you guys think of them? We are also open to Audi Q7s, VW Touareg and Discovery 3/4s.

What would you all recommend? He is not to keen on the FFRR. He does not really like the look of them.

What would you guys think? We'd be looking for one with all the extras; leather (heated), Good Sound System etc etc.
Must be commercial with VAT Receipt.

15,000 -18000 is the budget. It's only as a run around but will be used for towing every now and again.

    Thanks i advanced.

this is just my opinion but I prefer the discovery 3/4 over the range rover.

    great 4x4 too.

    if I was able to I would've got one but I couldn't.

I used to own a 2008 Discovery 3. However I find the spec of most Commercial Discovery's in this country as very poor. Paddy Spec!
    All Manual with cloth seats.

I think he is looking for something with a-bit more comforts.
    I do like Discovery's though.

does it have to be commercial ?

the discoverys do have hse models too with leather 7 seats and automatic if you wish too. think they had the built in phone and sat nav too if I remember.

the budget given there would get something decent indeed.

It has to be commercial due to VAT implications and don't want to get caught up with company car tax implications.
That's why we are looking more towards the RR Sport HSE and Audi Q7. They both have higher specs and come in commercial form with the VAT receipt.

have you thought about a high end shogun/pajero?

very comfortable to sit in and drive and excellent value for money compared to a range rover or Q7 (imho).

even if it wasn't already commercial, you could get it converted professionally and still be quids in.

i just got this 2007 shogun elegance (leather, cruise control, aircon, electric heated seats and uprated sound system with dvd player, satnav and reversing cam & sensors) for £9100 in the UK.

    sonofpajella.jpg

it's got 100k on the clock, but FSH from a main dealer and every receipt from everything she's ever had done to her and only one owner from new, so it's hard to argue.

she'll be getting a set of BF Goodrich All-Terrain TA's in each corner to see her through the winter and improve her off-road capability as soon as the budget allows, but other than that it's in great condition and I'm very happy with it so far. :)

I'm not afraid of converting it too commercial. But whats the story with VRT and the VAT as I mentioned earlier? VRT would only be a problem if bringing it out of the UK. I hear it's no longer 50 euro.

    4x4? Yes
    In budget? Yes
    Commercial option? Yes
    Diesel option? Yes
    Lots of toys? Yes
Towing capable? Oh yes yes yes

Import your own one, register within your budget. Tower over everyone else. Rather outrageous though

I thought that they'd stopped allowing conversions to commercial.

RR Sport is a Disco 4 in a sharp (and IMHO tasteless) suit, built on same chassis and production line. They were never factory built as a commercial and never will be unlike the Disco. Commercial RRS would have been converted on import on a lower spec model.

Doing your own conversion to commercial isn't worth it, you'll destroy the interior plus you'll have to pay to get it assessed before the VRO will look at it.

Post 2010 commercials have to be factory built so no more luxury 4x4 vans. Not sure how LR have pulled it off but post 2010 Discovery 5 seaters and Defender Station Wagons are now class N1 commercial, saves VRT and VAT even if you have to pay private road tax.

There's a monster of a Dodge Ram in Fethard but it would pale in to insignificance beside this :D

Out of the list I'd go with a touareg with the 3.0 tdi get one with leather in a good colour and its not a bad place to be. The Q7 is a really nice car to sit it but the exterior looks I can't take. I have to say do I'd personally take a tdv8 ffrr.

    Thanks Sean.

I know the all the Car-vans in Ireland are converted when they got here. The demand elsewhere for a Commercial RR would be very very small.
    Only in Ireland eh?

However just after checking carzone one can still buy new 2012 RR Sports Commercial. These where converted upon arrival I know but it is still possible. Also I noted you said most Commercial RR Sports where low spec however upon checking I noted that the majority are HSE whereas the passengers ones are lower SE/ S.
I imagine this is due to the VRT extra costs.

Your right, The FFRR tdv8 is the best. Only have to convince him of that.

Mine's only a 4.2, 5L is only last couple of years. Don't have a fuel card, would you take a credit card?

i was looking at a FFRR with an LPG conversion to help with the fuel costs, but you just don't get much value for money in a RR compared to the pajero/shogun in the same price range and in the end common sense won over the desire to have a FFRR. :)

also, i told a mate i was thinking of getting one and his reply was "i don't think you're enough of a cnut to own a range rover". :D

not sure about the commercial thing, it might be easier to get that done and registered in the UK before bringing it here maybe to avoid the hassle this end (if that's possible)?

regular (non-commercial) VRT was about €5500 on it.

I saw rrs in the starting topic , if your gonna have a range rover at least get a proper one alot less gangster especially for someone a bit older. Sorry but in this price range a shogun doesn't cut it nice spec but not excatly a nice place to sit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

i was originally planning to get a FFRR myself, but the value for money just isn't there with them and they're still expensive to run compared to the shoggie/pajero.

obviously if your primary concern going to be status then a FFRR is always going to be the way to go, but if you want to be more practical about it and you want a 4x4 the mitsi's are definitely a better buy imho and it's not like it's a skoda. ;)

never find a parking space again.

when you drive a truck like that, other cars roofs become your parking space.
