Handbrake imbalance

    Our '04 Ducato failed the DOE for the second time on an imbalance in the handbrake. Our mechanic adjusted it on gravel by gauging the biting point for both sides. He was pretty happy it was close enough but it failed by a good margin.

    Is there a scientific way of setting it and would it cost a fortune to have it done properly? I can't find out very much about it online.

    Normally it should be straight forward we do all ours on the lift. First by adjusting thehandbrake at the wheels never use the cable. Only use the cable to take up the slack. Has your mechanic being adjusting the shoes at the wheels. ? Has he checked the shoes are also in good condition?

    If you were going to use the 'pull the handbrake and measure the skid marks' method, then its daft to do it on gravel as there is no pressure on the handbrake(i.e the wheels lock too easily on the gravel). You would need to do it on dry level ground.

    Obviously its not an ideal way to check it at all and if properly checked and adjusted on a lift then they should be even anyway.
