Came across this on a hike near an cheathrú rua in galway (wooded area near a lake on the oughterard road). Curious to know what its for? For animals or does it serve a purpose? It was green and kinda slimy. I questioned afterwards if it was poison?

In the absence of a picture, I'll guess it was a salt lick put out by hunters for deer.

Apologies, the pictures didnt upload off my phone. It was quite high off the ground (~7-8 feet) for a salt lick. but i've always assumed they were for animals like deer etc. Could it have been for birds?

OK, that's wierd. Very 2001 a space odyssey. How high roughly? Would a deer reach up on its hind legs that high?

I'm 6ft and on my toes i could touch it so i think about 7-7 and 1/2 feet off the ground. Not sure if deer would go that high, or if it would even occur to them to. it seemed out of place in the environment. yeah I was puzzled...

It doesn't look like it has any Ogham markings to me?

Very strange OP, been googling/ image searching for the last half hour trying to find something similar but no joy.

No, i dont think it was ogham. the surface was slimy and could have that texture from moisture run off....
it was a bit similar to that stuff "oasis" for putting plants in https://www.google.ie/search?q=oasis+foam&hl=en&tbo=d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=KRm2UNfSMZGYhQeZv4DQBA&sqi=2&ved=0CAQQ_AUoAA&biw=1890&bih=959
but it was more solid and mounted on some kinda spike on top of the tree stump.
