Whats the latests with this. The Bank of Ireland on Dame Street is being converted into a public space and this would be the ideal location for it.

At this stage I would be highly sceptical that it'll ever see the light of day again

    Talk to NAMA about that

There was tug of love between Busarus and some Casino place in malahide, before it disappeared off the radar altogether.

The finger would seriously want to be pulled out.

Bank of Ireland aren't in NAMA so there's no need to involve them. There is no Bank of Ireland on Dame Street BTW, Livelinedipso :)

The last I was told by those who know more about it, plans are afoot to keep the collection in Malahide within a new buliding close to Malahide Castle grounds. The collection is safely under lock and key for now but there is a lot of restorative work required on it before it can finally return to the public eye. Money is there to do it so it's more of a when than if but it is going to be a couple of years away.

The BoI on College Green/Dame Street.

There is a real danger the collection coulld be subject to arson or theft while in storage.

There are days I just want to leave this mad country for good. Like, tomorrow...

College Green, man, College Green :)

The collection is safe where it is now. It's securely packed, cataloged and is a secure unit until such time as it can be rehomed properly. I hear you but if anything, it's safer now than when it was in Malahide Castle :)

AFAIK that refers to the Central Bank of Ireland whose operations are being transferred to a NAMA building down the docks - 'eventually'.

You being you, I guess :) It won't end up heading up the N4 on the back of a lurry to sink in a bog, that's for sure ;)

They'll end up sitting out in the open at the scrapyard at Dromod beside a rusty airplane and forelorn 1970's rural schoolbus, as nature reclaims what was once her own and reunites another important piece of Irish social history with the countless 1/1 scale versions already oxidised into their elements all across our fair isle.

Almost poetic. You should be on the Leaving Cert English syllabus.:D

You should read my collection of poems about the decline of the Bauxite trains in Waterford.

With all due respect to a model railway, while notable in its own sphere, I think we might want to think bigger for a space as iconic as the BoI building.

My understanding is that it will be re-homed to the Casino in Malahide. This is located as you are coming into Malahide village on the Malahide Rd just on the left hand side before you cross over the railway. A beautiful old building with a thatched roof that needs to be restored.

The money is there for the project, but I'm not sure what the delay is. Presumably planning permission. It is in a good location between the station and the castle grounds.

Best place for it would be in a new rail museum in part of Inchicore Works but that would involve innovation so stick it back out in Malahide.

Contracts signed for Casino House in Malahide

    Mark O'Regan – 19 January 2014
THE largest model railway in Europe is on track to be housed in a historic Dublin building as the centrepiece of a new €2m tourism development.

The Fry Model Railway, which was painstakingly painted by hand more than 70 years ago, will be at the heart of a massive new tourism project at the site of the old Casino House in the seaside town of Malahide, north Co Dublin.

Sorry for breaking the embargo again but as George Hook would say, there's so much horse manure in that article it's difficult to know where to start. "The Fry Model Railway, which was painstakingly painted by hand more than 70 years ago..." .How do you 'restore' a small thatched building to rehouse a massive model railway layout without destroying it?

Then the piece is finished with the tired old delusionary Irish quip about the finished exhibition being "to become the largest model railway collection in Europe."

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,073 ✭✭✭gobnaitolunacy

All the article is short of is another journo railway cliche...'light at the end of the tunnel'

Nothing to see here folks, move along.

While I share your cynicism this news is what I had mentioned ages and ages back. There are guys behind the scenes who are working to get it back onto public view; were it not for their work 3 years ago it may well have packed away and not spoken off so it appears that their hard work is beginning to bear fruit.

As a side note, there are days when I feel that it should be renamed the Fry and Tighe Model Railway give the amount of work that Tommy put into the restoration of it, long after his retirement.

Don't think the location proposed is suitable, and all sorts of stumbling blocks have been pointed out by a poster in another thread. If they can find a city centre location for something as piffling as a 'National Leprechaun Museum' then why not the Fry Collection?

Fair play to all involved in trying to get it rehoused displayed again but I agree with the above on location.
But then again it rail/ transport heritage related so on a loser with the powers on high anyway.
If it was a silver teapot collection or found in a bog I'm sure it would get a floor to itself in Collins Barracks !

because despite the interest on here and elsewhere it is a pretty niche area - model trains. The general public / tourists just don't have the interest to justify it I would say. I've been to it before and while its interesting the modelling isn't exactly of a standard to have as a major tourist attraction in the middle of the city.

The leprechaun museum on the other hand plays on "Oirishness" effectively to tourists and can justify it's location through sales.

Heard a piece about the Little Museum of Dublin, they seem to be doing quite well for themselves, got a central enough location and are intending to expand. Is it on the tourist radar much?
