Sheep liver fluke

I know we have been reading a good bit about the high incidence of liver fluke this year. I lost a ewe about 5 weeks ago. I had dosed them with a fluke dose about 6 weeks previously. I had also dosed them with rumen fluke. However I lost 2 more the following week. Had the vet out to check through symptons and he advided to send to dvo for post mortem if i lost anymore. i also dosed them all again for liver fluke last week but lost another one.
I sent it to dvo for pm.

They confirmed it was acute liver fluke. Found no eggs or immature so hopefully I should be clear now. They also said they were getting a huge increase in numbers of sheep coming in for pm and it was mostly acute liver fluke.

Anyway a word to you all to ensure your sheep are dosed for fluke a bit more frequently this year.

Are you sure you were using a fluke dose that covered immature fluke?

This year whenever I was dosing I gave any thinish ewes a shot of Zanil as well for the rumen fluke. My Vet said is way ok to administer together but I wouldn’t rely on zanil to kill liver fluke

Yep I was using flukiver 5 percent. It covers immature and mature

Look up the lifecycle of liver fluke. It involves an intermediate (mud snail) host and is a bit complicated. Lots of info on Google.

    Hi Sea12,

Sorry to hear that you lost some, and thanks for highlighting the issue...

Do you think you should have dosed more often, or you think Flukiver just wasn't up to the job?

Like yourself, I used Flukiver a few times already, and used Levfas the last time (about 7-8 weeks ago now)

The reason I'm asking is cos I bought a bottle of Flukiver, and am planning to dose em all on Saturday. But am interested to hear what you think...

    Thanks.

    Hi john.
I normally use fasinex but was advised by supplier to switch to avoid building up resistance. He had both so he wasn't trying to sell one over the other.
I think it was my own fault for leaving too long a gap. Plus they were on wet ground all summer. The post mortem said the ewe was clear of eggs and larvae which would suggest the dose had worked but that there was too much damage done at that stage.

Best of luck with the dosing.
