Ticking noise from engine.

The car in question is a 2006 Mazda 3. When the engine is cold just after start up there is a ticking noise while in gear and accelerating. This is only while the engine is cold, after a minute or so it can't be heard anymore. Its linked to the rpm, the higher the rpm the faster the ticking noise.

Anyone got any idea what it might be?

    Cold tappet?

I had this on an opel vectra, turned out to be the bearings on the timing belt pulleys, get it checked out.
At first they told me there was no noise, so I arranged to leave it overnight one frosty night, when they started it next morning, there it was.

It's either a tappet or pulley bearing. The reason it might go away when the engine is warm is because metal expands and it fits better. Get it checked out though as it could lead to irregular wear and possible failure.

Have you checked your oil level?

Even if the oil level is ok, the wrong type of oil being used during the engines life can cause issues with sticking tappets.
