Hello to all you expert PC builders.

I would like to build a PC for general home use with some occasional video/photo processing [Premier & Photoshop], no gaming. Intel/AMD CPU, I've no preference. Will an onboard video chip be ok or will I need a video card?

    1. What is your budget? [€400-450]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [ Internet/ General MS Office/ Video editing]

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [No]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [ 2x Hard drives/ 2x DVD Drives. I would like a new case with audio and usb connectors on the front or top and a suitable PSU. Maybe 8/16 Gigs of RAM? My current PC will be passed on to the kids.

    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [N/A]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [No]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [A Card Reader would be nice]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [No]

    8. How can you pay? [Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [Dec 12/Jan 13]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.] N/A

Thanks in advance for your help.

Eboggles build is way better then what you'd get from PC World. Add 20 euro's to the cost and hardwareversande will build it for you.

I've been running Windows 8 for 2 weeks now and it isn't all that bad. I've got start8 installed so, I don't even have to deal with metro. BTW, I had no intention of upgrading from 7. The only reason I did was because I bought it for 14 euro's. If it's a new build and you can get windows 8 cheaper then there is no reason you shouldn't buy it.

Thanks uncle_sam_ie, I'd have no problem building it myself.

Could I use this case instead of the first one?

The mobo is unavailable with no forecast date for delivery.

Please could you suggest a different mobo/cpu combination.
Also, I noticed the the suggested mobo appears to have a combined mouse/keyboard PS2 socket. How does this work? I currently have a PS2 connection on both my mouse and keyboard. I'm using this setup because I'm using a two way KVM switch for my current PC and the kids' PC to save on monitor/mouse/keyboard and desk space. I'm open to suggestions as to how to improve this setup.

Aplogies to the mods if resurrecting this thread is out of order.
Just after I asked about details for a new PC the last time, my car had a canary and that was the end of the money for my new PC.
Time has moved on and I'm in a position to have another go at building a new PC. My budget is €400 delivered.

I would like to build a PC for general home use with some occasional video/photo processing [Premier/Vegas & Photoshop], light gaming. Intel/AMD CPU, I've no preference. Will an onboard video chip be ok or will I need a video card?

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [ 4x Hard drives. I would like a new case with audio and usb connectors on the front or top and a suitable PSU. Maybe 8/16 Gigs of RAM? My current PC will be passed on to the kids.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [The option to add in a video card at a later stage might be handy if the CPU doesn't have a good video chip]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [DVD burner and a Card Reader would be nice]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [No]

    8. How can you pay? [Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [Sept/Oct 13]

I like the idea of an SSD for fast booting, but it's not a show stopper as I rarely power down the PC.

Thanks in advance for your help.
